During the holiday season me and my family love to drive around different neighborhoods to see who has the best holiday light displays. For really spectacular holiday light displays there are many places to visit in New York that you shouldn’t miss.
Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree
This year the tree is already at Rockefeller Center and the tree lighting ceremony will be on December 2nd, 2009. Rockefeller Center is located in the center of the buildings between 47th and 50th Streets and 5th and 7th Avenues in Midtown Manhattan. The 76 foot Norway Spruce made its way from Connecticut to Manhattan on Nov 12th, 2009. If you plan on going to the tree lighting ceremony, you must get there very early as the crowds are immense. The tree will stay lit until January 7th, 2009, so their will be plenty of time to go check it out.
Macy’s Holiday Display
When you go check out the tree at Rockefeller Center, your next stop should be Macy’s Holiday Display. Macy’s is located on 34th Street in Midtown Manhattan. Macy’s window displays are beautiful and different every year. Inside Macy’s you can make your way to see Santa and on your way you will also see some great holiday displays. It is a must see for your children.
Dyker Height, Brooklyn
The best holiday light display that I have seen in a New York neighborhood was in Brooklyn. Dyker Heights is a neighborhood in Brooklyn near Bayridge. My sister lived in this neighborhood when she was first married and we would take a walk every Christmas to check out the displays. I don’t think I have seen anything top this yet. Motorized Christmas displays and Giant sized figures. Some of the figures that I have seen were giant wooden soldiers, gingerbread houses, music box ballerina, and Santas. Millions of lights and every house has a different theme. I really can not explain it accurately. You really need to see it for yourself! Some displays go up after Thanksgiving, but the best viewing is mid December. Visit between 7-9PM for the best lighting experience. Parking is difficult…it is Brooklyn! You can drive past and look from your car but it will take you a long time to get through. It is better to park a few blocks away and walk. These holiday lights displays are located on 11th Ave to 13th Ave from 83rd Street to 86th Street.
Jones Beach Holiday Lights Spectacular
Located at Jones Beach in Long Island. You actually stay in your car and drive through the holiday light displays, consisting of over 1 million lights. Displays are set up on both sides of the road in different themes which change every year. You can usually tune your radio to a certain station and you will get Christmas music specifically designed to go with the displays. At the end of the road you can visit the snack stand and get Hot Chocolate for the ride home. The Jones Beach Holiday Lights Spectacular usually runs from the end of November to the beginning of January and is definitely a must see if you are looking for some great holiday light displays.
This is just some of the great places you can see holiday light displays in New York. There are many more as New York is known for some of the best holiday lights! Families will love New York during the holidays there is so much to do and see during this special time of the year.
