President Obama’s Speech on Healthcare: Get Tough, Get Rough, Get It Done! Healthcare Reform Now
Maureen Down made some great points in her Op-Ed piece about President Obama’s fight for healthcare reform. She is urging him to fight the good fight, no holds barred. Like many Democrats, she wants him to go for the jugular of the Republicans and their inane rhetoric about death panels and other arguments against healthcare reform.
Maureen Dowd suggests in the NYTimes that President Obama should: “keep your foot on your opponent’s neck.” She added “It’s good if people in the way-including rebellious elements in your own party-fear you.”
She gives President Obama the advice to “get angry.”
Fight, Fight, Fight, Go Get ‘Em President Obama
So move ahead with vigor President Obama; even your own former campaign staffers are getting upset with you. Let your anger show. Let your White House pit bull, Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, show his anger too. Both of you, use your power to derail the insipid media smear campaign the far right is waging.
Fight fair, but fight hard. Let your indignation about the current dangerous health care system in America show. Wage relentless battle in this fight where the stakes are so high. How many lives will be lost if healthcare reform does not occur?
This is the fight of your life. You fight not just for the forty million Americans who do not have insurance, for every American who has a terminal illness and is beset with catastrophic medical bills far over what the insurance will cover, but you also fight for the ability to make right the horrible experience you had of watching your own mother fight against deadly ovarian cancer, worrying all the while about the bills that were in excess of the insurance and sapping her fight to live.
Fight on President Obama. You are calm, and you are brilliant, and you have street smarts too, though you don’t often let them show. Use them now. Wage the battle against lies and snarky smears about death panels and other catchy phrases the Republican sleaze campaign is so adept at manufacturing.
America needs you to win this battle President Obama. As long as health care is the mess it currently is we are all in danger due to medical bills that bankrupt any financial stability. Not too many families can handle Cobra payments of over a thousand dollars a month to continue a family policy with Blue Cross. If it comes to a choice between the mortgage and insurance, most will choose to pay the mortgage.
Americans are all at risk with our current health care system where insurance companies are Machiavellian illness profiteers who will try to dump a patient on an individual policy at the first sign of a serious illness. To insurance companies an ill patient is a financial liability and they will try every method possible to eliminate that patient from their coverage.
The NY Times reports that in tonight’s speech President Obama said his plan “would guarantee all Americans coverage, regardless of preexisting medical conditions, while letting people keep their own insurance if they wanted.”
President Obama spoke of the “scare tactics” the Republicans are using to try to fight healthcare reform. He also spoke of his continued desire to have a “public option” included in the final version of healthcare reform.
U2’s lyric “Where you live should not decide whether you live or whether you die” from the song “Crumbs From Your Table” seems very appropriate to describe America’s perilous healthcare system. Currently, if one faces cancer or AIDS or some other catastrophic illness, too often the stress from the huge medical bills that exceed insurance coverage make it ever harder to manage the illness. This is tragic. This is not acceptable in America.
So get it done President Obama. You can do it, you will do it. Cut through all the idiotic rhetoric of the sad, sad Republicans who never take campaign loss well and move on. Win this battle for all Americans. You are a new president and you will most likely be the president remembered forever for making America safer via healthcare reform.
God bless you and know that your Mother is looking down on you and she is cheering for you as you wage this battle so the next woman who gets ovarian cancer will never find herself in danger of losing her insurance coverage or of being beset with catastrophic medical expenses above insurance coverage.
As we move out of the years when the Republicans would rather spend billions of dollars to wage a bogus war in Iraq than reform healthcare to help Americans ensure their families will have safety, security, and adequate medical care, it is time now for change. Bring it on President Obama. History is waiting to be made. Godspeed!
