It is that time of year again, when we get together with friends and family for cook-outs and a fun day outdoors. You got it. It is Labor Day! When having company over you will want to serve them some fun drinks, which will keep them cool and hydrated, yet taste delicious.
Here are some recipes that are easy to make and will have your guests coming back for more throughout your cookout.
Homemade Strawberry Lemonade
This is a nice twist to the typical sour lemonade taste, by spicing it up with a little sweetness.
½ cup sugar
3-½ cup water
½ cup lemon juice – you can either buy lemon juice or freshly squeeze about 4 to 5 lemons
Fresh strawberries – a few whole and a few sliced
Combine sugar and ½ cup water in small pan and heat. Constant stir until sugar is melted without boiling water. Once the sugar completely dissolves, bring to a boil. Simmer for 2 minutes (uncovered) and then stir in lemon juice. Let stand until cool. Put in refrigerator until cold for serving.
Once cold, add slices of strawberries. Keep the whole strawberries as a garnish on the glass.
No family cookout is complete without old-fashioned sun tea.
Four to five family-sized tea bags
Sugar, if desired
Lemon, if desired
Mint leaves, if desired
Place tea bags in large glass tea container, which can be found at any department store. Let sit in the sun for about 3 to 5 hours until fully brewed. If you would like your sun tea sweetened add sugar to desired sweetness. Place in refrigerator until nice and cold.
Serve with lemon wedges or mint leaves, if desired for added taste.
Fruity Punch Bowl
This is a standard drink for any large gathering. It is easy, quick and can be refilled with little effort, leaving plenty of time for you to enjoy your company.
2 liters of Fresca (or similar soda)
1 gallon of pineapple juice
1 gallon of orange juice
To make ice ring – fill ring with water and add strawberries, cherries and mandarin oranges. If you do not want your ice ring to water down the punch use Fresca instead. Freeze completely. If you do not have a mold for an ice ring you can do the same with ice cube trays by placing one fruit in each cube section and top off with water or Fresca.
For punch – pour Fresca and fruit juices in punch bowl. Top off with scoops of sherbet. Just before guests arrive, place ice ring in bowl to cool off punch.
Enjoy your cookout! Happy Labor Day!
