Last week I accepted an assignment from Associated Content to write an opinion piece on health care reform and immigration. Among the many issues legislators are fighting over is whether or not to allow illegal immigrants access to federally funded and operated health care. To most thinking people the obvious answer is “no”. The President himself has stated repeatedly that health care reform would not include coverage for illegal aliens (remember Joe Wilson’s “you lie” statement), yet lo and behold, a handful of Democrats in the House announced over the weekend they would fight to keep coverage for illegals from being dropped from the final bill. Said California Democrat Rep. Michael M. Honda:
“Undocumented, if they can afford it, should be able to buy their own private plans. It keeps them out of the emergency room.”
Those joining Honda on behalf of illegals said it’s unfair to bar illegal immigrants from paying their own way in a government-sponsored exchange. Unfair? How on earth is it unfair to deny illegal aliens the benefits afforded to hard-working American taxpayers? The idiocy of some of our leaders is absolutely astounding, my friends. Illegal immigrants are by default, criminals living in, and off, the Untied States of America. We should be doing everything in our power to remove them from our soil, not encouraging them to stay and invite their friends. In addition, we ought not be so naive as to think illegals would purchase their own insurance through a health care exchange even if they could. They would be discovered and deported – they’re not that stupid. What they’ll do is continue what they already do; illegally access the Medicaid system which doesn’t require proof of immigration status. The only way illegals would purchase their own insurance is if they could be guaranteed access with no questions asked.
Those who would argue on behalf of fairness for illegals are also the same people who believe the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay have Constitutional rights. It sickens me to see our government, as the Bush Administration did, cave to the mindless howling of those who wanted Constitutional protections for enemy combatants. Since when does the U.S, Constitution apply to non-U.S. citizens? The founding fathers would roll over in their graves if they could see what was happening.
Guantanamo prisoners and illegal aliens do not have Constitutional rights according to the document itself which states:
“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”
Does the text anywhere indicate the framers intended to extend Constitutional rights to illegal aliens and POWs? No; the Constitution applies to “WE THE PEOPLE, OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and no one else. As we start to apply Constitutional rights to non-citizens we are also beginning to de-value the document and all it stands for. You see, with Constitutional rights comes responsibility; the responsibility to live according to the laws of the land and to defend the nation against those who would seek its destruction. Our rights are not merely designed for our own consumption, as far too many people seem to believe.
Illegal aliens, by the very definition of the terms, are not obeying the law of the land. They are here without permission or consent, many of them working to send money back to their homeland in order to secure their own future, never intending to stay here. Others want a permanent residence in the U.S. but are unwilling to go through the procedure to do it lawfully. Why do these people deserve fairness? And, by the way, how is “fairness” defined? If it’s defined as giving illegals Constitutional rights and protections it would also mean they should have the right to vote in American elections. If it’s defined as making sure that have access to health care coverage then they must also have access to public education, welfare assistance, legal representation, unemployment insurance, worker’s comp and disability insurance, and on and on. Where does it end? Are the left-wing extremists defining fairness as giving illegals full citizen status without actually being citizens? I think so.
As for the prisoners at Guantanamo, here’s a newsflash for the Congress, the White House, and the Federal Judiciary: they are not criminals, they are prisoners of war. What the U.S. military decides to do with/for/to them is their business, not that of the Congress or the courts. The Constitution without question gives jurisdiction in military matters to the White House; why presidents have acquiesced to Congressional or Judiciary pressure since Korea is beyond me. We have separation of powers for a reason.
But back to health care and illegal immigration.
Why would the President and assorted members of Congress want to give illegals access to health care coverage under their so-called “reform”? To buy votes. In other words, they have immigration reform on their agenda as well, and if all goes a planned illegals currently in the country will be automatic citizens when they push that reform through. Even if illegals never access the health care system, they’ll remember who gave them the opportunity and will cast their votes accordingly once they become citizens. It is politics to the extreme.
Meanwhile the average American citizen becomes a hostage to ever increasing taxes and a system that harms them in order to satisfy people from other countries. Is this the sort of thing our forefathers gave their lives for? Would George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, two men at opposite sides of the political spectrum, ever damn the future of their own fellow citizens in order to buy votes or pacify foreign governments? I seriously doubt it.
Illegal immigration and health care reform will be the final nail in the coffin of this country if they are ever enacted and combined. We simply cannot sustain them financially and once the system collapses, we’ll be at the mercy of the government. That’s what they want; that’s what they’re working toward; that’s what they’ll get if we don’t stop it.
