Remedies for Dry, Flaky Skin – Cure Itchy, Dry Skin This Winter

by sawpan

No one wants dry, itchy and flaky skin because it is not only a painful condition, it is also unsightly. Dry skin can result in red, blotchy spots all over your body during the dry winter months. When drinking water, eating a healthy diet, adding a humidifier to your bedroom and only taking cool or lukewarm baths does not work, try these remedies for dry, flaky skin.

My daughter uses a natural home remedy for her dry, flaky skin. She has eczema and this has worked well on her skin to sooth dryness and help her skin retain moisture and oil. Every evening she massages olive oil on her skin until it is thoroughly absorbed. Olive oil is an excellent source of antioxidants (phenol and Vitamin E) and helps firm and smooth skin as well as maintain natural moisture. You can also add this to your bath water for a soothing, relaxing bath. If you do not want to use pure olive oil, look for skin care products that contain olive oil as the first ingredient. (NOTE: grape seed oil is good too if olive oil does not work for your skin)

Shea butter is another excellent remedy for dry, flaky skin. This ultra-rich emollient penetrates the skin very quickly giving you smooth, soft skin. Since shea butter contains high amounts of Vitamins A, E & F, it nourishes your skin while it hydrates. Because of my daughter’s eczema, we use shea butter products that are as pure and close to the natural as possible for better results (sheabutterhut.com). You can also find products that contain shea butter at Bath & Body Works, Bath-and-Body.com and BestBathStore.com. Try to find products that contain pure shea butter or at least high levels of shea butter.

A good, natural home remedy for extremely dry skin can be found in your kitchen cabinets. Make a paste from 1 teaspoon egg yolk, 1 teaspoon of honey and 2 teaspoons of milk powder. Apply this paste to dry, flaky patches and allow to dry for 15 minutes. Wash with cool water and repeat as necessary to relieve your dry skin.

Oatmeal has natural healing properties and has been used for centuries to cure dry, flaky skin. Products containing oatmeal are excellent for treating your dry skin especially in the winter. Use an oatmeal soap such as Yardley of London or Aveeno Moisturizing Bar in a cool or lukewarm bath to cleanse. Pat skin dry and immediately apply a moisturizer that contains oatmeal such as Avon’s Moisture Theapy oatmeal creams and lotions while skin is still damp.

Honey is a natural dry skin remedy because of its ability to heal and moisturize. Honey also has antibacterial properties, which helps skin that may be broken or cracked from dry skin. Look for products that contain honey such as Perlier Honey skin care products or Thentix lotions. It is best to use products that contain pure honey and natural ingredients.
