Your pets are your best friends, your companions, and in many cases your world. However, sometimes life pulls you in a thousand directions, and you have no idea which way is up and what to do next. We’ve all been there. There are 3 car pools, dinner, lunch, work, wake up early but you woke up to late, kids, spouse, bills not enough money, too many wants from everyone, and you know you need to slow down but you just can’t. Life has a way of getting out of control, and this is not an article about getting it back under control. There are tons out there, read those. But, this is an article about the little fury beast you took into your home way back when that usually get neglected when life gets this way. Please take a minute to look at it through their perspective.
When you take in an animal you are in indoctrinating them into a pack. according to Cesar Milan, “Your dog sees your house as a dog pack. The husband and wife are the Alpha Male and Female, and they are about mid dog or just below the kids. . ….If you don;t take these roles, they will take these roles and that’s when you have a bad dog.” This does not go just for dogs, this is for cats and Ferrets, and all animals that are allowed to run freely around your house. Take some care in this process, for you are setting yourself up for the rest of your life. With this said, however; you also have to understand these animals expect your house to work like this pack. Often, after a few years or sometimes months, the new puppy Rover who got all the love and attention of everyone, is now “the dog” that needs feeding and walking.
Often these animals turn into another chore rather than the living, breathing, feeling creatures that they are. They are part of your pack, therefore they only want the pack to be together all the time. This never happens, so they are always at a constant state of awareness and uneasiness. It is only when they have accepted certain people not of the pack, will they accept their leaving. Most animals, however, can easily decide to accept and let go of many people throughout their lives. When you leave the house and leave them at home, the pack is completely separated. We see it as just going out, they see it as a division of the power and the status quo. This why most dogs won’t eat or do anything for that matter when their owners are gone, because the Alpha male and Female have left. For most animals this is equal to the leaders of a country splitting and nobody knows where they went. If you take this idea into thought, you now understand so many animals misbehave while you’re away.
But, what happens when you get home? They are in a state of pure elation. They don’t know what to do with themselves. They feel that a piece of them has been brought back. they see your return, no matter how long it has been, as a time for celebration and party. If we are busy, we yell at them. Push them, pull them, and get angry at their annoying behavior. This is a severely destructive mixed signal. We have just destroyed their good feelings. We’ve just told them there is no reason to be happy that we have returned. the only reason there is no reason to be happy is because you’re not the lead dogs. Therefore, they have decided who the dog is amongst themselves. If there is only one animal in the family, often this animal chooses to be with the only person who gives them any attention at all…even negative attention.
What about the outside? Try staying in a house for 18-20 hours a day. Only allowed to go out of that house for 5-10 minute intervals. You should try this, it’s an amazing experience. Because when you do get outside all you want to do is move and jump. But, remember the animals are on leashes a lot of the time. they are not allowed to be themselves. Also, remember that their nose is sending them 1000’s upon 1000’s of pieces of information every second. They are beckoned to go see every scent they can smell. They are in a state of stir crazy cabin fever, and we yell at them, smack them, choke them, and finally decided not to do that anymore. Why is it we don’t take this small situation into consideration? Do they not deserve to lounge outside? Of course they do, and many of the city park and recreation people are noticing this as well. There are dog playgrounds that are popping up all over, many right next to playgrounds you can take your children. These play grounds allow your dog to run free and have the time they truly want. Some dogs, like mine, just want to lounge about.
Please remember your fury friends, and look at the world and life in their perspective. They are living breathing creatures just like you and I. They see the world differently than us, because they are a different species. But they are also fully dependent on us. So, be a little nicer to the animals below your feet that no matter what will give you unconditional love, even if you neglect them for years. As soon as you began scratching and walking them, they will love you for it. They are our only reminders that unconditional love does exist in this worked of ours, and it is being shown to you on a daily basis.
