Rep. Carolyn Maloney’s husband, Clifton Maloney, has died in a mountain-climbing expedition in Tibet. According to Politico, Clifton Maloney had reached the summit of Cho Oyu (the world’s sixth-highest mountain) when he began the descent down from 27,000 feet. After reaching a base camp, Clifton Maloney was tired, hungry, and deprived of oxygen (as is common problem in high altitudes). After going to sleep, he never woke up.
Clifton Maloney, 71, was the president and founder of C.H.W. Maloney & Co., Inc., an investment firm. He previously served as an investment banking vice-president at Goldman Sachs. He also served as director at Chromium Industries Inc. and The Wall Street Fund. Clifton Maloney is also a retired Navy veteran.
Clifton Maloney’s wife, Carolyn, is the United States Congresswoman representing the New York’s 14th congressional district (which includes eastern parts of Manhattan, Roosevelt Island, Astoria, and Long Island City). Carolyn Maloney is quite popular, as many New Yorkers felt she should have been chosen over Kirsten Gillibrand to succeed Hillary Clinton in the Senate.
Irish Central also describes Carolyn Maloney as a “friend of Ireland,” citing her efforts to strengthen relations between America and Ireland as well as her support of the Good Friday Agreement.
Rep. Carolyn Maloney’s husband, Clifton, Dies in Climbing Expedition: Silver Lining in this Tragedy?
Clifton Maloney’s untimely death is certainly a tragedy for Rep. Carolyn Maloney and her family. What was supposed to be a celebration turned into mourning. Carolyn Maloney was attending a dinner party when she heard the news of Clifton’s accomplishment. She had celebrated by raising a glass in her husband’s honor. Unfortunately, she would receive a piece of bad news the next day.
Yet Carolyn Maloney may find consolation in spite of this tragedy. Clifton Maloney had previously failed in his attempt to climb Cho Oyu. By reaching the summit of this mountain, Clifton Maloney had achieved a monumental dream. As he told a compatriot, “I’m the happiest man in the world. I have just climbed a beautiful mountain.”
There are many excruciating ways to die. While this doesn’t take away from the grief that Carolyn Maloney must be experiencing, there may be comfort in knowing that her husband died a happy man.
