As tough as it is to admit this the right has got it all wrong on the energy issue. Since Obama made his comments about airing up your tires and getting regular maintenance on your car he has been thoroughly criticized by Republicans and right wing media. Don’t get me wrong I think the guy is on the wrong side of the fence 99% of the time but not this time. Life is full of baby steps and I believe the energy issue can be resolved using baby steps. A national speed limit has been proposed by at least one lawmaker (Senator John Warner of Virginia who is actually a Republican) and most laughed it out of consideration. In America we can only think of the here and now. We are so selfish that we only consider the ideas and proposals that will make things better for us right now.
Yes, we can start drilling in Alaska and off the coast of California and in the Gulf of Mexico. I would say that right now most American’s would prefer this. That is just a band aid solution. It solves the problem for the next 50 to 100 years, if even that long, and then our kids and grandkids are left to deal with this problem again except now they have no resevoir or resources to fall back on. I am no environmentalist but unlike most Republicans I do believe in global warming and Tom Delay may think it is cocky to believe that humans can affect the atmosphere and world we live in but I bet there will be a few Olympic athletes come back from Beiijing and say something must be done to clean our planet up. The environmental aspect is just a side argument for no drilling in my opion.
Right now we have a strong national conversation going regarding alternative energy. We open up these resevoirs and once they start producing oil in 3 or 4 or 5 years gas prices may drop down to $2 or $3 a gallon but that is just a quick fix. Right now we have the greatest opportunity in our history to solve this problem. If gas prices start falling we will all go back to our crazy lives where we consume as much oil as possible and we forget all about pursuing alternative energy options. I believe you have to be stupid not to think that if gas dropped down to $2 a gallon we would consider to use it in the way we have been for the past year. Gas has dropped from around $3.90 to $3.50 and I have already started planning a road trip to Alaska (not really), but just seeing gas drop almost $.40 has made me want to hit the road. Things will be great today if we start drilling and gas prices go down but in the future the problem will arise again without as many options. If you have not looked into PickensPlan I urge you to read up on it. If a man with the name of T. Boone Pickens can make billions in the oil industry I am willing to give his alternative energy plan a shot. As his commercials have said it is going to take many steps to implement his plan and there are going to have to be some major financial backers. I say we bite the bullet now and get it over with instead of leaving the problem for a later generation. Not to mention a bigger gun and a bigger bullet.
