Diane von Furstenberg debuted her Spring 2010 collection on Sunday, September 13th at New York’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week with looks that followed the adventure of a free spirited woman on safari. Celebrating the splendor of antiquity in separates, dresses, bathing suits and a variety of animal layered prints; von Furstenberg’s collection was bohemian, fluid, unconventional, and all together modern.
Theme: An Adventurer’s Oasis
The inspiration for Ms. von Furstenberg’s New York Fashion Week spring line came from the desert, her love of antiquity, and images like a phoenix rising. Ms. von Furstenberg visited Egypt and ancient parts of the world and similarly, her collection embodied that adventuring spirit. Her woman travels through time and temples, whether it be Greece, Italy, Mesopotamia or Africa, on an exploration of beauty around the world.
Spring and summer 2010 von Furstenberg fashion incorporated ethereal and romantic prints. Complicated layering was excessive at times, but like the iconic Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress, many of these looks were simply elegant. Lively and vital, the fashion show exuded imagery from great civilizations. Olympia, Rome, Cairo, Babylon, and Africa all lent their styles to an elegant world vision.
Materials: The New York show featured a host of materials. Chiffon, macrame, jersey, knits, fringe, and gold mesh all created von Furstenberg’s effortless, ready to wear look. Beautiful woven, beaded and sequined dresses glimmered down the runway.
Structure: Diane von Furstenberg’s spring fashion grounded its oasis theme in fluid movement. Sheer flowing materials and beautiful draping gave the fashion collection movement and grace. Flower print chiffon dresses rippled to the floor, while harem pants in animal prints partnered with tunics. Easy jackets over gorgeous dresses even offered a tailored option. T-shirts met with togas. Belts lassoed animal print layer upon layer. The looks for this wandering soul ranged from a gold bomber jacket to a macrame shift or a ruched bathing suit. Ms. von Furstenberg’s dresses stole the show as usual with chiffons that draped and gathered divinely.
Prints and Colors: The Spring collection featured sunset colors with brilliant yellows and burnt oranges. Gold, copper, green, blue and purple also complemented the desert motif. A full palette of natural earth tones worked with a diversity of animal prints mixed and matched, sometimes too thickly. Swirl and floral prints joined with the other looks and created color combinations that crossed cultures.
Accessories: The models were accessorized with belts, metallic platform sandals, evening clutches, and large bright sequined bags. Each woman wore multi-colored, woven, African bangles that were stacked on each arm. Wire garlands of gold, green, orange and blue flowers decorated their hair.
Model Styling: With long flowing hair, the models looked fairylike and ethereal. Sparkling, mystical eyes and lips completed their nymph like New York Fashion Week makeup.
Favorite Look: The gold asymmetrical dress near the end of the collection was stunning. Beautifully draped, it shimmered and flattered. This Diane von dress was the epitome of sophistication and simplicity. The green macrame dress also wowed.
Body Type: The variety of styles showcased at New York Fashion week work on many different body types. Ms. von Furstenberg has designed womens shapes for decades and her collection was anchored with familiar pieces that work. Her fashion has and will always complement different bodies and sizes.
