Christmas is a time to spread cheer, happiness and hope. It is a time of brotherly love and uplifting the weak, depressed, and fallen. However, many people in this world are not able to know the joy of Christmas. Many people are sick or poor. Others have no family or friends to give them Christmas cheer. This is where you can make a difference in your world. Athens, Georgia, provides plenty of opportunities to spread the Christmas spirit. Any donation, large or small will make a difference to someone.
Most famous of donation sites is the Toys for Tots drop. Local Wal-Marts have a drop in the front of their stores, but the best place to donate for Toys for Tots in Georgia Square mall. This drop site is in a central shopping location and it is manned by Marines during the drop off hours. When you go shop at the mall, pick up something extra and drop it in the donation box. Give Christmas to a child who may not have one otherwise. http://toysfortots.org/
The most fun way to donate is making the Christmas shoe boxes for Samaritan’s purse. This type of donation allows you to decide if you want to give gifts to a boy or girl and then select the age range. You wrap your shoe box and then fill it with presents and basic necessities to be taken to children overseas in some of the poorer countries. This donation does not go to local children, but it is a great way to spread Christmas cheer and give basic necessities to children in other countries. The shoeboxes can be dropped at Central Baptist church on Danielsville Rd, and Watkinsville First Baptist Church in Watkinsville. http://www.samaritanspurse.org/
Another really great mission to donate to is the Sparrow’s Nest. The Sparrow’s Nest has a clothes closet that takes in clothing for people who are in need, and they also take volunteers to help with toy distribution. The nice thing about this charity is that you can donate time instead of toys. They need people to help transport the toys, sort the toys, and distribute them during the weeks before Christmas. They also provide for needs through food and bill funding to local people during times of emergency. The Sparrow’s Nest is located at 745 Prince Avenue and works very closely with several of the local churches. http://www.sparrowsnestmission.org/needs.html#ep
Athens Urban Ministries is another great place to spend time or donate money to. Athens Urban Ministries provides a place for the hungry to eat at Our Daily Bread on Oconee street. It is a soup kitchen of sorts, but you’ll find more than just soup being provided as the meals. Additionally, this charity provides hygiene items, legal assistance, and psychological referrals if needed. The nice thing about this charity is that it’s open year round. You can give hope to the hopeless during Christmas and beyond. http://athens.actionministries.net/index.html
As you can see, the Athens area offers many ways to spread love and brotherhood throughout the Christmas season and the year. Take some time this year to lift up those around you. Merry Christmas!
