Burn is the latest suspense novel by New York Times Bestselling author, Linda Howard. Burn was published in July of 2009 by Ballantine Books. Burn tells the story about a woman who wins the lottery jackpot and the way her life changes. It is also about how her life changes and what she does to make sure she herself doesn’t change while things and people around her change.
Jenner Redwine is an ordinary woman with an ordinary life when she heads into a store and purchases a lottery ticket. She has no way of knowing that her life is about to change and it may not be for the better. The next thing she knows is that she has won the lottery and her life is no longer hers, as soon as she finds out. She never realized that money would change her life, everything, and everyone around her. She will soon realize that with the changes that will occur, it will also make her regret ever purchasing that ticket. She is used and abused because of her lottery win. Her father is one that she does not suspect of anything bad until he ends up ripping her off. Then to make matters worse, he leaves without a word or anything else. The man that she cares for, the man she thought was above it all, soon breaks it off with her. Even her friends are a disappointment to her. They think that since she has won the lottery, she should pay for anything. When she makes the decision to stop that, they turn their back on her and ignore her when she needs them the most.
Jenner cannot imagine living in the land of the wealthy after her win and having money to do what she wants to do now. She can’t even think that her life will be since she is now wealth. Her life does change and seven years later, she is around the rich much of her time, doing things that she only have dreamed of. She still feels like an interloper, someone who should not be where they are, someone who should still be where she was many years before. She is lucky to have found someone who understands and someone who helps her through this life that she now lives in. Sydney Hazlett is from this world of the rich and powerful, but she is also kind and someone who does not care for the spotlight. She becomes a close friend and someone that Jenner can talk to.
Jenner is invited to join Sydney on a cruise that is for charity on a luxury liner. Jenner is not sure about this cruise but after agreeing, she feels that she should not be going. She is sure that she won’t have a good time, that her time will be lonely and being afraid. She is wrong. What she thought was going to be something like out of a romance novel, it turns out to be completely different and something out of a movie by Alfred Hitchcock. She ends up becoming a captive of someone who has an agenda. She has to figure out how to do what he says in his game or end up being hurt or worse. Her life, as well as Sydney’s life in danger, Jenner has to figure out to get out of a situation that seems only to have one way out. She ends up having feelings that she has not encountered in many years and wants to keep those feelings. She wants to live so she can explore her feelings and find out what else that she can do with her life. Will Jenner survive? Will Sydney survive? What will happen to the two of them? What will Jenner do once she survives? To find out what happens in this newest novel by Linda Howard, you need to read to find out what happens.
