I’m going to keep my rotten customer experience with Lowe’s article as short as possible because I’m sick of telling this true story. After explaining my experience to five different Lowe’s employees, and to anyone in my family who would put up with listening to my nightmare experience, I’m just about worn out! But customer service is one thing that really bothers me (see “Why I’m Starting to Hate Walmart… Okay, I Hate Walmart Already!” HERE) and I find that putting my complaints on AC helps me get over the stress… so here I go!
I needed a recessed 2 X 4 fluorescent light kit that takes T8 bulbs. Off I went to the closest Lowe’s, which is a 30 minute drive from my home. This was the first time I shopped for fluorescent lighting so I needed help. I could not find help. Big store, hardly any shoppers, but obviously the employees were busy doing something because they were not on the floor ready to help a customer. After walking around for too long looking for help, I decided to go back to the front of the store and have someone call for help. They did. I went back to the lighting section and waited.
Help arrived. He pointed out the T8 light kit that I needed. I checked the big tag and sure enough, it said 2 X 4 T8 troffer (a new word I learned). I tried to pick up the box but it was quite heavy and would not fit into the cart. As I struggled, the man started to walk away. I laughed a bit and asked if he could take time off from his break to help me. He tried to put the box in my cart. I convinced him to carry it and walk to the register with me. Long walk. Poor him.
They rang up the light and I stared at the screen to make sure I got the stated price of $37.98. I did! It said T8 troffer: $37.98. All was good… until the next day. When my handyman came to install the light he noticed the box said T12 and not T8 (takes different bulbs). I was shocked. I got my receipt and sure enough, the receipt said T8. I called Lowe’s and after a solid minute of listening to menus and making my choices I got a live voice. He looked at the lighting and the tag and said that the tag under that particular light was indeed wrong. I asked if I could maybe get a gift card or something for the trouble I was now going to have to go through to return the light and the time I was going to waste. He said I should have looked at the box. I explained that I relied on the Lowe’s employee to know what he was talking about and that I checked at the register to see that it rang up correctly and it did. He said to talk to a manager when I came in.
This story is already getting too long and starting to make me mad so I’m going to wrap it up! The short story is this (no way it’s going to be short)… I explained my situation to the employee at the return counter. She said she’d call a manager. I said I’d go look for the correct light and to have the manager meet me in the lighting department. As I started to walk away I see an employee approach the girl at the return counter. I go back and tell her my story. Then I find out she’s not the manager but she also said she’d call the manager to help me.
I needed help again to find the correct T8 troffer light. No help to be found. I picked up a box that I assumed was the correct light. I dropped it. I got another one. I drag it to the return counter to wait for the manager. And there was a young man who asked me how he could help me. I told my story once again. When I was done he said I’d need to talk to a manager. That is when I lost it. I yelled “you are not the manager????” so loud that people in the checkout line jumped. And I continued to yell for a solid five minutes. No one had actually called the manager! No one! So I made them call and finally a manager showed up. I’m surprised security didn’t show up to drag me out of that store. Customers who were through the checkout line were staying in the store just to watch the show. And I was happy to provide them with entertainment.
I finally got the manager to see things my way and I left it up to her as to how to resolve the problem. I would have been happy with a $5 gift card to help pay for the extra gas but she gave me the new light kit at half price. I still left there baffled as to how wrong things can go when shopping for a light. We are getting a new Lowe’s in my town of Sanford, Me soon. I don’t know if I’ll dare to shop there. I won’t be able to yell because the employees may be people I know!
