Thanksgiving is a time when dinner guests often out number the amount of available seating at the dining room table. Most families handle this problem by put the “grown ups” at one table, and send the kids to the kitchen where they must eat by themselves at the dreaded “kids table.”
But just because the kids are sitting at their own table for Thanksgiving doesn’t mean they should miss out on the fun Thanksgiving decorations and centerpieces. The kid’s table should be decorated with Thanksgiving themes that the kids will enjoy. Here’s some ideas to get you started:
Thanksgiving tablecloth. You can start your kids table decorating ideas with a fun and colorful Thanksgiving tablecloth that has lots of kid appeal. Potterybarnkids.com has a wonderful, linen/cotton tablecloth covered with appliqued turkeys, boats, and autumn trees. This tablecloth measures a generous 70″ x 90″ and is priced at $59.00. This is one tablecloth that’s bound to be a favorite for kids tables year after year.
If the Pottery Barn tablecloth is a little more than you’d like to spend, a much cheaper alternative for a kids Thanksgiving tablecloth can be found at KMart.com. Kmart has a plastic 96″ x 52″ plastic tablecloth covered with turkeys and sunflowers. At the low price of $2.09, this fun (and spillproof) tablecloth is pretty hard to top.
Melamine or Paper Thanksgiving plates. Pottery Barn Kids also seems to be the place to go for themed Thanksgiving plates in durable melamine. The PB Kids line of plates feature colorful turkeys and are priced at 4 plates for $34.99. Here’s the link so you can check it out for yourself.
No one else, unfortunately carries anything even close to the Pottery Barn melamine for a cheaper alternative. But, one site worth a peek for Autumn melamine is Target online which has a fun melamine pattern called “Swirl” in autumn colors. The set of 12 plates runs $21.59 and can be paired with autumn leaf shaped salad plates, priced at $19.79 for the 12. Target also has figural gravy boats, serving platters, and dip & bowl spreader which would make wonderful Thanksgiving dinner accessories for the kids table as well.
Even cheaper yet, “Thanksgiving Blessing” banquet style 11″ paper plates are available through Amazon Marketplace. Priced at $4.39 for a package of 8, these cute, turkey motif plates are sold out at many e-tail merchants though are still in stock at Amazon. Here’s the link.
Centerpiece ideas. Miniature pumpkins always make fantastic centerpieces for a kid’s Thanksgiving table. Another low cost centerpiece idea is to hollow out a mid size pumpkin and use it as a vase for fall flowers such as mums or sunflowers. Autumn leaves gathered from your own yard can be sprinkled around the base of the pumpkin to give it some added color.
For a traditional store-bought centerpiece, one item that caught my eye was a figural turkey candle from PotteryBarn.com. This 5-1/2″ figural turkey candle almost looks like the real thing and is priced at $14.
Another fun great alternative is the Honeycomb Turkey centerpiece from Partyandpaperwarehouse.com Currently in stock is a colorful 12″ high Thanksgiving turkey, priced at $14.21 for a case of six.
Paper napkins in a Thanksgiving theme is available at most dollar stores at bargain prices. For a bigger selection of Thanksgiving themed napkins for kids (and even adults), check out Paperandnapkins.com. This store carries a fabulous supply of decorator Thanksgiving paper napkins in a wide assortment of Thanksgiving themes. These decorator napkins are packaged by the 12 count for $5.95. While visiting the site, don’t miss their line of Thanksgiving coloring placemats which are a bargain at $4.95 for the 24 count. With coloring placemats and a handful of crayons, your kids won’t mind sitting at the kids table at all.
