My hair was down to my waist and it was time to let it go. I don’t much care for anyone fussing with my hair and so I tend to let it get very long. But I was in the mood for a change. I was getting older and feeling the need of a more ‘age appropriate’ hair style. So off to the beauty shop I went. I don’t have a favorite place to go since it is not my favorite thing to do. As I waited for the hair dresser to be able to do her magic on me I flipped through the magazines to see if I could find a picture to show her what I wanted. Of course what I wanted you actually need hair with some body to start with so I had to settle with what could be done.
When the beautician was ready I sat in her chair and took off my glasses and took out my hearing aide. That is one reason I don’t like going to have my hair done, I am completely at her mercy once I have taken off my glasses I can’t hear as well because I can’t see what people are saying but that is whole other story.
I wanted my hair cut to very short and a perm; that should give me the more mature look I was wanting. I showed her the picture of what I thought I might like her to try to do. However, she had ideas of her own. The perm idea was great but she seemed to think it would be better to cut my hair to shoulder length which was what she did.
What happened while she was giving me my perm was not big deal. You see I have a small lump on the top of my head. It was about thirty years old and I really didn’t give it much thought, mostly I forgot it was even there. Not a big deal, I really hardly ever thought about it. Certainly nothing I would actually spend money to go to a doctor for! It was about as round as a nickel and it was about half an inch high. Well, she took her three prong comb to pick up some hair and stabbed the lump. It didn’t hurt, there was no feeling in the it. She apologized and continued with the perm.
I have to say here, I hated the end results of the cut and perm. I didn’t want my hair shoulder length and with the perm I now looked like a poodle. What a waste of $60! I came home and combed it out completely and was just down right aggravated. Both with her for not doing what I had asked and with myself for not making her fix it.
A couple of days later my head itched and so I reached up to scratch it. It just didn’t feel right. It felt like maybe there was a scab or something so I asked my husband to check it out. When he looked he saw a scab alright but something was protruding from it. He took some twisters and pulled out a core that was the size of an eraser from a lead pencil. The next day when he looked at it again he removed another piece of skin from the area and within a few days the whole thing healed very nicely.
So the way I look at it is that while $60 is a lot for a perm it is a very good deal on having a lump removed! But I don’t recommend it.
