I have been inspired by my collegues on AC who write an article every week and thought I would like to do the same. So I racked my brain and came up with a weekly article called “The Alphabet According to JerseyNana”. This will use a letter every week, giving me ideas for the next six months and if it is a hit, I can keep it going. Of course, I welcome suggestions from my friends who comment regularly on my contributions. I truly hope you will not be bored, so I am putting it together for Youngsters, In-Betweeners and Seniors so there is a little bit of everything.
Youngsters: I found two “A” words for youngsters. In almost every kids book devoted to the alphabet, they always start with APPLE. Youngsters today have so many different apples to choose from. They are yellow, pink, green and every imaginable shade of red. How lucky you are to have such a wonderful choice because back in my youth, there were only a few kinds, so have an apple and enjoy every bite.
AUTHOR, you can start writing stories as soon as you can write. Make a story book about something you like and keep a diary or journal each day before you go to bed. Write about what a great day you had; you will be so happy when you get older to see how you have grown and remember things you would have ordinarily forgotten.
In-Betweeners: Here are two words for you in-betweeners to consider: ACTIVITY is a good one for you, make some time for family fun activity, play games, go for a walk together, or just spend some family time together. I used the word APPLE for the youngsters, so if there is a place near where you live, go apple picking, I urged the youngsters to write a diary or journal; so when they get bigger they can bring out their journal and say; “remember when we went apple picking?” and you can all have a great memory of family fun.
ALCOHOL is the other word for you in-betweeners. We are approaching the season where alcohol will be abundant. Nana is warning you to please take it easy with the alcohol. It’s nice to be sociable, but make sure you do not do this on an empty stomach. Nothing can ruin your holidays more than an accident, DUI violation or worse yet, being killed or injured by a drunk driver. If you must drink, please have a spritzer with mostly club soda and very little wine, save the drinking for when you are home and don’t have to drive.
Seniors Well I never expected to be in this category, but here I am. AGING has certainly caught up with me, but I urge you to ignore those aches and pains and have the best time you can. After all; you earned it. Make sure to laugh each and every day and find goodness in everything because nobody likes an “old grouch”.
ASK is the other word for you seniors. We become stubborn or set in our ways when we get older, but like I said; you earned your senior status. So ask if you need help or if your family wants to know what you would like to have for a gift. We tend to feel that at our age we have everything we need. How about a day of beauty; and that goes for you guys as well as the ladies. A new haircut or to color those grays, you will be surprised how a haircut and a facial will make you feel, and guys, please have the barber trim your eyebrows and ear hair, it’s a dead giveaway that you are older. And don’t forget to ask for your senior citizen discount, all stores do not post it, so you may be losing money if you forget to ask. The worst that can happen is they say no!
