The Anticipated Movies of 2010

You may be waiting anxiously for the nest installment of a sequel, curious to see a remake of a classic, or excited to see an original film, however the movies in 2010 will have all that and then some. Some of the sequels are relatively recent whereas some of the others have been years in the making. At least two of the anticipated movies in 2010 are remake classic tales originated from books written in another place and time. Here now is a brief overview of the 10 movies to be released in 2010 that you should be on the lookout for.

10.) Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps – Remember the famous line in the original “Greed is good”? Gordon Gekko is back once again in a sequel from the 1987 Academy Award-winning film ‘Wall Street’. Michael Douglas reprises his role as Gordon Gekko. Oliver Stone directed the original and this is the first time he has directed a sequel. The movie is set in June 2008 when Gekko’s released from prison after serving 20 years. It takes place right before the Wall Street stock market crash and federal bail out. Then throughout the film, it deals with the aftermath of the stock market crash as Gekko tries to repair his estranged relationship with his daughter Winnie. Gekko befriends Winnie’s fiancĂ©, Jacob, played by Shia LeBeouf from the Transformer films. Release date is April 23, 2010. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1027718/

9.) Robin Hood – One of two remakes from a classic, the legend of Robin Hood. He stole from the rich to give to the poor. It’s the fifth film collaboration of Russell Crowe, who plays Robin Hood, and Ridley Scott who directed it. Originally the movie was titled ‘Nottingham’ about the heroic sheriff of Nottingham. However, the script was not to Scott’s liking, so it was rewritten into a story of Robin Hood being an outlaw. The director never liked any of the previous film versions of Robin Hood. In this current remake it takes you on a journey as to why Robin Hood is an outlaw and how his gang becomes the Merry Men of Sherwood Forest. Cate Blanchett stars in the female lead as the widowed Lady Marion whom Robin Hood tries to woo. Release date is May 10, 2010. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0955308/

8.) Toy Story 3 – Tom Hanks and Tim Allen reprise their roles as Woody and Buzz in this third sequel of the upcoming computer animated 3-D film. The plot is based on Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz (Time Allen) being dropped off at a day care center, along with the rest of their toy box friends, while Andy is now a young adult departing for college. 7.) The Book of Eli – Denzel Washington stars in this post-apocalyptic drama directed by the Hughes brothers. The main character, Eli, is a lone hero who guards the Book of Eli that provides knowledge which could redeem society. The antagonist, played by Gary Oldman, tries to take possession of the book. It was filmed in New Mexico in early 2009. Release date is January 15, 2010.

6.) The Last Airbender – A fantasy film written, directed, and produced by M. Night Shyamalan of The Sixth Sense” fame. This is a live-action film adaptation from the first season of the animated television series ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’. One of the featured actors in ‘The Last Airbender’ is Dev Patel, the main character in the Oscar winning film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. The film has its influences from Asian art, mythology, and various martial arts fighting styles. Its premise is about the Benders, the Fire Nation who can control the four elements of the world, waging an oppressive war to capture the other great nations.

The last known surviving Airbender, Aang, is aided by a protective Waterbender as they go on a perilous journey to restore peace and harmony in their world. Shyamalan became aware of the tv series ‘Avatar’ when his daughter wanted to be Katara, the Waterbender, for Halloween. Afterwards, he and his family watched ‘Avatar’ as a family event in their home. 5.) The Runaways – Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning of ‘New Moon’ team up once again in this biopic based on a true story of the first all-girl band from the 70’s named ‘The Runaways’. Stewart plays one of the founding members, Joan Jett, and Fanning as Cherie Currie, the lead singer of the band. It chronicles the band from 1975-1977 with the very highs and lows of their successes in the U.S. and in Japan.

4.) Remember Me – ‘Twilight’ and ‘New Moon’ star Robert Pattinson is one of the two young lovers whose newfound relationship is threatened when his love interest, Ally, witnesses her mother’s murder. His character, Tyler, then deals with the suicide of his brother causing his parents to divorce. Release date is February 12, 2010. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1403981/

3.) Alice in Wonderland – Tim Burton directs this other classic tale from the famed novels by Lewis Carroll ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ and ‘Through the Looking-Glass’. The film will combine techniques of live action and motion capture technology with digital 3-D. Mia Wasikowska has the lead role of Alice. Johnny Depp is The Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter is The Red Queen, and Anne Hathaway is The White Queen. In the plot Alice is now 19 years old attending a party full of snooty people. She then runs off with the White rabbit into a hole back to Wonderland. This is where her adventure begins when she realizes it’s no longer a peaceful kingdom. Burton wanted to keep the classic nature of Alice as a story and felt the other film and TV versions were always about a girl wandering around from one crazy character to another. 2.) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part I – It’s a two-part British-American fantasy film adapted from the novels by J. K. Rowling. This is the seventh and final film in the popular Harry Potter film series. The second part will be released in 2011. It follows Dumbledore’s death with Voldemort now in power and control of the Ministry of Magic. The trio of Harry, Ron, and Hermione drop out of school to pursue and destroy Voldemort’s three remaining horcruxes. Let the adventure begin. 1.) Iron Man 2 – In the original Tony Stark revealed at the end he is Iron Man at a press conference. This follows up six months later after his revelation was made to the world. It has taken its toll on Stark while his alcoholism tries to take over him. Robert Downey, Jr., and Gwyneth Paltrow return to their original roles, Don Cheadle replaced Terence Howard as Lt. Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes / War Machine. Jon Favreau is back as the film’s director. Release Date is set for May 7, 2010. http://ironmanmovie.marvel.com/
