On New Years Day the undefeated Cincinnati Bearcats will get a chance to prove that they belong amongst the nations elite football teams. They play the 12-1 Florida Gators whom are coming off a loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game. It’s ashame that the people at the BCS are so afraid of having non-BCS conference teams end up undefeated with wins over BCS schools. Otherwise undefeated TCU and Boise State could’ve had a shot as well instead of playing each other in the Fiesta Bowl.
It’s painfully obvious that the BCS put TCU up against Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl on purpose to prevent either from having a better argument at the end of the season. Could you imagine the complaints if he somehow ended up with Alabama/Texas, Cincinnati, Boise State and TCU all undefeated with BCS bowl wins? It would’ve been a complete nightmare for the system. That is why they matched Cincinnati up against arguably the toughest team not playing for the title and then put TCU and Boise State up against each other in the Fiesta Bowl.
I know that somebody is gonna come back with the argument that those teams play in bad conferences. Well statistically the Mountain West has been just as good if not better than the Big East the last several years. There has even been talks of Boise State possibly joining the Mountain West and it becoming a BCS conference. Even the Texas Longhorns this year didn’t have a good strength of schedule as a matter of fact it was barely better than that of TCU.
I don’t think anybody expected teams like TCU or Boise State to get into the national title game over a team like the Texas Longhorns. However they certainly deserve a chance to play a bigger opponent to prove that they belong rather than getting matched up with each other in a rematch from last year’s bowl season.
As you can imagine the TCU coaches and players are clearly upset. They have one of the best seasons in the schools history and then end up getting pretty much the same bowl matchup that they had the previous year against a non-BCS conference opponent. I’m sure that to an extent Boise State probably feels the same way about the situation.
It would be interesting to see both TCU And Boise State get together and come up with some kind of trophy to play for in the game. They could discuss it leading up to the game and mention that they are making their own championship since they will never get a chance to play for the BCS championship. Regardless the players deserve a chance to play for something more than what will be called a second rate BCS bowl matchup.
