Video games are a pretty good way to relive stress and occupy time in my opinion. They can especially be good for young children in that many teach some aspects of strategy. There are three main video systems that are competing for your hard earned money these days. They are the Xbox 360, the Play station 3, and the Nintendo wii. All three have their advantages with little disadvantage and they all provide hours of fun.
The first gift you can look at is the video game system if the person you are buying for does not have an up to date one. You can buy them any of the three that I mentioned. I personally would advise the Xbox 360. I have played all three and enjoy that one the most based on price and game play. You can get some good deals at video game stores on either refurbished systems or even a used system. This is one thing I do not recommend people buy off eBay because of the nature of the system. Also it is worth it to buy a warranty play if you buy it from a place like Best Buy. They have systems with and without games. You can find various deals but for a new Xbox 360 figure on putting out at least $300.
If you elect to get the Xbox 360 and use high speed internet there is a good chance you may have a use for my second and third gift ideas. With the wireless adapter for the Xbox 360 you can get online with the video game. You can play other people from around the world. In games like NCAA football you can play against them. Squad based games like Ghost Recon allow you to play together with someone in a cooperative style. You could even be playing with a soldier serving their country in one of the wars being fought. One word of caution to parents is that this is the internet and you want to make sure perverts are not being inappropriate with your children. These will run you about $80-$100.
If you want to buy upgrades, new levels and special powers for the games you can buy an Xbox live membership or gift card. They are given in various point increments and allow you to do various things with the Xbox online. You can even download games with this. You also can buy gold or silver memberships. The price will vary based on the gift card or membership that you chose. You can usually find a 1600 point gift card for $20.
My Fourth through tenth picks are my top video games for Christmas 2009. I own a couple of these and are really happy with them. The rest I have played and should provide lots of enjoyment for that video game player on Santa’s list.
What video game list would be complete without a good football game? NCAA football 2010 if your standard college football game. You can play against the computer or a person and even online. It is your standard play the game and win the championship. The graphics and sounds are awesome and you can play in a dynasty mode that allows you to recruit and retain players to build a long standing football dynasty.
Dead Rising is not suitable for all audiences. It is sort of a rip off of Dawn of the Dead in that you are in a mall and zombies are trying to catch and eat you. It was released in 2006, but if the person does not have it and is into survival horror games this is a good one. You can use various weapons along the way to kill zombies from bats to guns. There are also a variety of hidden weapons. There are like four videos showing you were hidden weapons are on youtube.com
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is a great military combat game. You will need to pre-order it if you are going to get it anytime soon since it will not be released until November 10, 2009. You can now play with a partner with split screen functionality in this game that you could not do before. You basically go around various levels shooting bad guys in order to win the game. They have also upgraded the various weapons that you can use from the previous versions of the game.
The Beatles Rock Band game will probably be more popular with an older person on your gift list, but some younger gamers are also enjoying this game. It is basically the same premise as Guitar Hero and Rock Band in that you follow the screen pretending to play and instrument as well as possible to rack up a good score. It is level based were you play at various dives that The Beatles played in England until making it to the big time at Shea Stadium. You have various Beetles hits like Cant buy me love and Twist and shout, but can also buy other songs of theirs online and download them. If the person has controllers already I see no reason go buy the specific Beatles controllers as they are quite expensive and function no better than any other ones.
My number eight pick is another football game, but it is a timeless classic. John Madden Football 2010 picks up were John Madden has left off. If you played John Madden Football 2009 they made some changes with the controller that you will need to get used to, but the graphics are awesome. There is the typical front office moves like the draft and trades but this also provides much better halftime and post game commentary. Most people really like the game. I do enjoy it but would recommend the 2009 version instead.
The Grand Theft Auto games are some of the more popular games these days. Grand Theft Auto IV makes my list in the number nine spot. There are new missions, vehicles and weapons that you can use in the game. It is still level bases and you complete missions to get from one level to the other. This is another one of those games that you should consider your audience before purchase. There are some rather mature themes within the game.
Rounding out the list at number ten is Marvel Ultimate Alliance part two. This is pretty similar to one. You chose both a character and characters to form a team with. One thing I really like about the game is that it allows you to follow the comic book storyline of civil war between the super heroes. This game is pretty suitable for most age groups depending on parental choice. The graphics and action in this game are great. It reminds me of watching Saturday morning cartoons in the 1980’s and being in the action.
The preceding is my top ten list for the video gamer in your life. This list is best suited from someone who does not have an Xbox 360. If the person does have one you could still probably find a game or two on here that you like. Merry Christmas.
