“What are you doing here?” he asked curiously.
“The same thing as you, I gather,” she said, in a cool voice.
“It didn’t take you long to find another man, did it?”
“What about you then? You’ve got a woman to hand at every opportunity.”
“Woman? What woman?”
“Oh, don’t play the naive spoil-sport with me, Demetri. Who do you think you were with at the table just now?”
“And what about you, Phillipa? Who’s the man?”
“It’s none of your business. Anyway, we’re not attached to one another, so we can see whom ever we want. Right?”
“If you like?”
“Yes, I do like. So stay away from me, Demetri.”
She didn’t mean it, but she wanted to hate him. She couldn’t give him the satisfaction of letting him get to her.
“If that’s the way you want it, then so be it. I’m going away on a short trip this afternoon to Greece,” he paused for a second and studied her face. “When I get back, we’ll have a chat and sort out our differences, and see what’s happening between us. I know I haven’t been to see you these past few days, but I’ve been tied up with business and it’s been impossible to get away.”
“You don’t have to explain anything to me, Demetri,” she spoke quietly, as he moved closer to her. The thought of his body close to hers was enough to upset her senses.
“I’m not explaining anything. I’m merely telling you the facts.”
“The facts? Don’t bother,” she said, turning her back on him to leave.
“Where are you going?”
“Home, of course. Where do you think?”
She felt his hand touch her arm, as she tried to get away.
“Let go of me, Demetri. It’s best we don’t see each other anymore.”
“Why are you doing this Phillipa? You know we are meant for one another, so why don’t you give in?”
“We’re not meant for each other. We’re always arguing and bickering about everything, so there can be no point in us seeing one another. Don’t you agree?” she pleaded with him.
“No, I don’t. Now why don’t you come with me to Greece. We can have a wonderful time together, my darling.”
He spoke more soothingly to her, making her want to give in to him.
“It won’t work, Demetri. Please. Just let me go.”
“Okay, but when I get back we are going to sort this out.”
“If you say so.”
“Yes, I say so,” he answered, turning her around with his other arm.
She bent her head and tried to avoid his eyes, but his hand touched her chin, lifting it up. She stared at him, unable to look away, as his mouth touched hers. He kissed her softly on the lips and pulled her to him. Her body entwined with his, as they stood there kissing.
It was hopeless. She couldn’t stay away from him. Each time she saw him her heart gave in to him. She wanted his love so much, but she was afraid to tell him how she really felt. She wasn’t sure why he was after her, but it was as if he craved for her touch. Could that be love, she wondered? No. He was only after one thing with her and that she was sure of now.
She pushed him away abruptly and stepped back.
“What’s wrong my darling? Did I hurt you?”
“No. I think you should go now. I must get back.”
“Why? Are you meeting someone?” he asked.
“No, I’m not, Demetri. You better go.”
“I can’t. I want you to come with me to Greece and I won’t take no for an answer. Come, take my hand and I’ll drive you back, so you can pack some clothes and be ready to come with me later. Please, Phillipa. I need you,” he said, stroking her face with his fingers.
“But you’re going on business. You won’t have time for me, Demetri.”
“Don’t be silly. I’ll have lots of time. I’m the boss. All I need to do there is check on some things at a couple of our hotels and that is all.”
What harm would it do to go? At least she would see Greece and it would be nice to get away from Jake. She knew she could stall Demetri if she wanted to, but she wouldn’t. She wanted to be with him. She loved him.
“All right. I’ll go.”
He pulled her to him and kissed her passionately on the lips.
“Come. My car is over here.”
He drove her home and she packed a few things for the daytime and evening. Demetri went back to his bungalow to get his bag and said he would be back in half an hour. She felt excited now and she was glad she’d decided to go after all.
