“Hello mum. I’m fine. How is everything there? Is Dad okay?”
She hoped there was nothing wrong. Her mother didn’t usually call her unless there was a problem.
“Yes, he’s just great. The reason why I’m calling dear, is because Jake insisted he needed to speak with you. Now I know you’ve had an argument, but can’t you just talk to him? You’ve left him in such an awful state. He’s been to see me several times this week and frankly, I don’t know what to tell him. I haven’t told him where you are, but if you don’t speak to him, I might be forced to give him your whereabouts. Now, I’ll pass him on.”
“Mum, I can’t…no…I…”
Phillipa was fuming. She didn’t want to talk to Jake. She had nothing to say to him. It was over. He’d left her for someone else. Her mother didn’t know this and she couldn’t blame her for doing this, but now she wished she’d told her what had really happened.
“Mum, I can’t…”
It was too late. Her mother had passed the telephone over to Jake.
“Hello, Phillipa. It’s me, Jake. I’m sorry I’ve got your mum to call you like this, but I’ve been worried about you. You left so quickly that I got worried.”
How dare he, she thought. He was the one who had left. He was twisting his story.
“You know Jake, you’ve got a nerve getting my mother to ring me after the things you told me. First, you tell me you’re in love with another woman and then you try to put the blame on me for leaving you. You were the one who wanted to leave, because you’d found someone else.”
She felt better for expressing her anger. It was true she’d left quickly that day, but that was because he’d told her about his new love. The cheek of him! She’d gone to stay with her mother for week her mother’s for a week and he hadn’t bothered to telephone. He hadn’t appeared to be concerned about where, or how she was. Phillipa had come across Marina’s letter in her suitcase. She’d received the invitation to visit Cyprus it a month previously and hadn’t replied. While staying with her parents, she took the opportunity to telephone her friend to say she’d love to see her. Marina hadn’t expressed surprise that Phillipa wanted to come so soon. She just she was looking forward to seeing her again.
Phillipa had explained to her mother that she and Jake were going through a difficult patch and had decided to make a new start apart. She didn’t tell her mother he’d found someone else. She’d been so embarrassed by the whole thing, she had needed to get away. So, she had come to Cyprus to forget him, telling her mother not to tell Jake where she was.
“Yes, I know, but it’s best you don’t tell anyone about that. You see, your mother thinks we should make another go of it, because we’ve been together a long time. Please come home, Phillipa.”
She couldn’t stand here and let him try to coax her into saying yes. She, also, hadn’t thought of Jake for a while and knew she’d finally got over him. It was Demetri that had held her thoughts recently and she knew how much she loved him. She had never loved Jake. She could see that now.
“No, I’m not coming back to you Jake and I never will. It’s over between us.”
“You can’t mean that. I’m sorry for what I did. We can work it out, I promise.”
“No, we can’t and anyway, what’s happened to the girl you’ve fallen in love with?”
“We parted, because I knew it was you I really wanted.”
She couldn’t talk to him anymore. He was truly getting on her nerves.
“I’m sorry, but we can’t go back to the way we were. I don’t love you. I’ve never loved you.”
The line went silent for a moment. She wondered whether he was still there.
“Jake…are you there?”
“Yes, I’m still here, but I’m not giving up Phillipa. I’m going to find you and then I’m going to show you how much I want us to get married as we’ve planned.”
She couldn’t believe it. She hoped her mother wouldn’t tell him where she was.
“Jake, don’t be silly. Jake…Jake, are you still there?”
The line had gone dead. She wanted to call back, so she could persuade her mother not to tell him her whereabouts, but time was running out and she knew she had to get ready before Demetri arrived.
