Barrett Graham, a sports columnist sat on the bleachers with a pen and notepad. He was there cover the big championship game pitting the teams Castle Bay and Derrelton. Kickoff happened and the game started. He was mesmerized at how these two teams got to the championship. Castle Bay was led by a Democrat who hated Nixon and had the worst team in the league. They started the season in last place, yet they were playing for the championship. It was nothing short of a miracle.
He then turned his eyes toward the Derrelton team. Their coach was a Republican who led his team to the championship five years in a row. During his past interviews with the coach, Barrett always heard him remark each year. ”As long as Nixon is President, my team is leaving with the championship.” Yet he noticed this year, the coach now bit his fingernails. Nixon had just been implicated in the Watergate scandal. Barrett smiled over the possibility the coach might have been too nervous. Too focused Nixon’s ties to Watergate than about winning the trophy this year.
The trophy was there in full form, a sight Barrett always smiled at.A huge trophy made of gold with a football at the top. It was the one of the biggest prizes in college football, the state championship! The Derrellton coach was a taskmaster. Yet Barrett himself never noticed worked his players too hard. None of the players on the team were large or athletic. So it always surprised how they ended on the football team with a such a demand coach.
It was now the second quarter and Barrett noticed the two teams were even so far. He downed a gulp of Coke, then picked up his pen and resumed taking notes. A player for Castle Bay had the ball and one guy from Derrelton ran after him. Barrett waited to see if would get he would get the ball or not. Yet before he knew it, the player from Castle Bay reach the end of the field, past the goal. He threw down the ball and there it was. Touchdown!
With a smile on his face, Barrett watched the Castle Bay team celebrate. He then watched the coach from the Derrelton team thrown down his baseball cap. He watched the coach yell at his teammates. This was the coach he came to know over the last five years. He was hell to be around most of the time. Yet Barrett guessed this was part of the reason why the Derrelton team were the champs five years in a row.
Halftime now dawned and Barrett noticed the two teams huddle up. There was something a bit odd with the Castle Bay team, he saw it. A bright glowing orb that shined in the middle of the huddle. With no clue what it was, he grabbed a pair of binoculars he seated next to him. He looked through them and noticed the coach held some kind of object within his hand. It glowed and Barrett was spooked by what he witnessed.
Barrett now realized the reason Castle Bay was even in the championship game. They used this charm to get them this far. Prior to this, Barrett always covered in his column how bad the team was. Even how they were lucky to finish last. Shaking his head, he almost wanted to laugh while he tapped his pen against his lip. He thought about whether or not the charm the coach held in his hand would help them win.
A good while after, he watched Castle Bay gain an edge in the game once it restarted. Their performance improved throughout the game. Almost if they could even beat Derrelton for the championship. Much the same way they improved during this season. He now knew the real reason why they improved. They were cheating. Barrett held back on his notes and knew he should not write about the charm. He would get laughed out of the newspaper.
It was now down to the last ten second and Derrelton now led the game. Picking up a lot of steam, Barrett was a bit shocked yet not surprised. Castle Bay looked like they were going to win. Yet Derrelton won each year for the past five years. Barrett wrote on his notepad ”Whatever the coach does to make them win, it works”. He then wished he had not written this when he saw what happened next.
After Derrelton scored the last touchdown and the whistle sounded they did celebrate. Yet it was coach did that unnerved Barrett. Through his binoculars, he noticed the Derrelton coach talk with this dark figure. One who had red horns, a tail, and a pitchfork. He realized this was how they won the championship five years in a row! The coach made a deal with Satan to ensure him the championship each year. It had nothing to do with Nixon, Barrett knew the champs were sure going to hell now!
