Lines and wrinkles, age spots and cellulite, these are just a few examples of the aging process. Now don’t get me wrong, with the bad comes the good. Reaching middle age is not all bad, and in fact, some of the changes are pretty darn good.
Now instead of standing in line forever, some youngster is liable to step aside and say, “After you, ma’am.”
When in a retail store it is not abnormal for some strapping lad to rush over to lift a five-gallon bucket of paint into my buggy. And on those days when I look my worst, if I fudge a little I can sometimes get a senior citizen discount on my meals.
Growing old is inevitable, but not welcome. No one wants to lose his or her youthful looks or the respect they have fought to earn through the years. So, when I found myself facing that dreaded transformation from girl into woman, I did what countless women before me have done, I went in search of the illusive, ‘fountain of youth’.
After using numerous workout tapes, exercise machines, cold creams, and anti wrinkle creams, I gave up on holding back the hands of time, which were busy etching their signature on my face and body. After convincing myself that I could deal with a more mature body and face, I took inventory of my inner self, then made a vow that I would never allow my spirit to whither and grow old.
The little pep talk must have worked, because suddenly my eyes opened wide and I was able to see my mission laid out before me. I must say I was surprised to learn that instead of being all black and white, it was a myriad chasm of color. Determination gripped me as I set out to rediscover the fantasy and mystique the world once held. If I could do this, then I could share my discovery with the world.
So I threw myself into writing and as I created my characters, both young and old, I found it exciting to step into their world to experience the romance, adventure, intrigue, and suspense that surrounded them.
Listen close my friend, when your eyes land on my face they no doubt see an old woman, but if you will only look deeper then you will find I am the giggling girl who is going to her first High School Dance. I am the young boy who is standing on the planked sidewalk of Dodge City trying to muster the courage to enter his first saloon. I am the Texas Ranger, with lips curled in a wide smile, racing my horse across the open prairie in pursuit of some diabolical outlaw gang. And I am the young, innocent debutante who is standing in the shadows, breathlessly awaiting my first earth-shattering kiss.
Now you know my secret and I hope you will spread it wide and far. The infamous ‘fountain of youth’ does exist, and it is alive and well inside of each one of us.
