Horror movie monsters have been an integral part of cinema since the dawn of the entertainment format some 100 plus years ago. In all those years, well over a thousand horror movies have been brought to audiences around the world. And it is most often the horror movie monster that steals the show, and becomes the most memorable part of it. In order to pay homage to the creatures of cinema which have entertained us through frightening us, I have prepared this guide to the top 5 movie monsters of all time. Here you will find all sorts of the stuff of nightmares, including one of the earliest classic monstrosities, as well as one of the newcomers.
Dracula – Since Bram Stoker invented him via pen and paper well over a century ago, The Vampire Count from Transylvania has been a lead mainstay horror movie monster ever since. As a master vampire, Dracula is nearly immortal with few weaknesses. But his curse compels him to take the blood of other living creatures. Dracula is also a bit of a ladies man, and doesn’t seem to have a problem keeping at least a few brides around him at all times. Interestingly enough, his love for the ladies is often the cause of his downfall, as people don’t usually start hunting him down until he starts messing with some other man’s woman. Some of the more notable actors to have portrayed the Dracula character have been Bela Lugosi , Christopher Lee, and Gary Oldman.
The Thing (1982 Version) – The original veggie bad guy from the classic Howard Hawks production of the same name was by no means any slouch within the considerably large member base of movie monsters. But director John Carpenter’s and Special FX whiz kid Rob Bottin’s took movie monster magic to new levels with their combined re-visioning of The Thing into a virtually unstoppable, and highly intelligent doppelganger virus. And if that wasn’t enough they also had to go and lend The Thing the power to transmogrify itself into any combination of species it had absorbed in order to attack and defend itself.. Nowadays hardly anyone remembers the old VegHead version, instead when you mention The Thing fans are more apt to recall such horrific imagery as scurrying spider heads, and a guy with a big gaping shark’s mouth for stomach.
The Xenomorph – When Swiss surrealist artist, H.R. Giger, finished up his famous Necronom IV painting, he probably didn’t have much of an idea at the time just how influential that Alien image would become to pop-culture. But so it came to pass and the antagonist Xenomorph from the Alien and Alien vs. Predator film franchises was born. For three decades now this iconic horror movie monster has been the leading cause of sleep deprivation for many due to it’s highly aggressive mood, acid blood, and penchant for turning humans into hosts for a grotesque form of parasitical reproduction
Freddy Krueger – Perhaps no other horror movie monster is more aptly suited for inducing nightmares than the psychotic human child killer, turned psychotic undead child killer… Freddy Krueger. You’d be hard pressed to find anything more frightening than a charred up freak that gets his jollies by using your own worst fears to torture and then kill you as you sleep. And did I mention yet that he has knives for fingers and always wears the same cheap outfit? Mr. Krueger has been portrayed by veteran and classically trained actor, Robert Englund throughout the entire Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, as well as the Freddy vs. Jason crossover.
Hellboy – The big red demon with the big stone right hand of doom, and a liking for pancakes and kittens is certainly the newbie on this list of the top horror movie monsters, but he is certainly not one to be trifled with! Anung un Rama, (Or more affectionately known as Hellboy), is also the only good guy monster appearing on this list but if his dark destiny constantly is tempting him with making the heel turn. He has bested ancient gods in the Ogdru Jahad, as well as the elven Prince Nuada and his invincible Golden Army. Ron Perlman has certainly made quite the impression with his starring role as Hellboy. The successful franchise has so far has spawned two films, Hellboy and Hellboy 2: The Golden Army.
