Looking for a good place to take a jog can be difficult, in both assessment of the aesthetic properties of a given location as well as in the appropriate terrain. In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, jogging is a popular activity that is aided by the diversity of the local landscape – ranging from mountains that can make a runners legs scream in pain to long flat stretches that are quite enjoyable with tremendous views. In nearly every instance of a jogging location found in Pittsburgh, runners will experience a mixture of hills and flats with a suitable location available for runners of all skill levels and endurance. Additionally, because of the sprawl of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area a beginner can find appropriate places to take a break when needed.
In the downtown Pittsburgh area many runners utilize the right-of-way along the rivers themselves because they are perfect for a quick run before or after work or during lunch breaks. Mostly consisting of paved concrete and offering amazing views of the “Golden Triangle”, and these areas are safe with few dangers from animals or people. Point State Park is also a nice place in downtown Pittsburgh to jog for those looking for softer surfaces such as grass or dirt. The Three Rivers Heritage Trail begins on the north side by Heinz Field and extends up the Allegheny River eastward about 7 miles, consisting of mainly packed dirt with a small stretch of concrete surface.
The local parks in and around Pittsburgh are perhaps the best overall opportunity for joggers, and the three best are North and South Parks and Schenley Park. North Park offers a place to jog on a paved asphalt trail that surrounds a beautiful lake, with wildlife everywhere. There are also over a dozen well-defined and worn jogging trails that are off-road consisting of packed dirt passing through woods that are absolutely beautiful. While Schenley Park is not too large, the location is very convenient situated between Oakland and Squirrel Hill and close to the major universities in Pittsburgh. Conversely, South Park is quite large and diverse in the selection of running trails.
Other great places to jog in Pittsburgh are anywhere on the lower north side, or along Carson Street on the south side. While these locations are usually accompanied by heavy car traffic the local neighborhoods are very interesting spots in which to people watch.
In any instance, it is always a good idea to drive a jogging route in Pittsburgh when possible before taking off on foot simply because the steep terrain in some places may be well beyond the endurance levels of an average jogger.
