These ten terrific tips about things that you can do to make you happy, are virtually guaranteed to bring a smile to your face and to hold you there for at least a while.
1 – Hug a large woman. Whether you know her or not, hugging a woman with some girth gives you a feeling of being wrapped in love. And it’s not just hugging her of course, it’s that big hug she gives you in return.
2 – Listen to the rain. There must be something primordial about rain. Maybe it goes all the way back to our cave man ancestors, sitting just inside their caves, watching and listening as the rain softly fell, knowing they were safe and warm, for just that time. At any rate, to allow a falling rain to make you happy, you have to put away all your other diversions and watch, and most importantly, listen.
3 – Offer a good compliment. While it’s pretty obvious that getting a nice compliment out of the blue from someone, it’s not exactly something you can count on. You can however get nearly the same benefit from being the one doing the offering. But be sure it’s a good one, heartfelt and meaningful.
4 – Recall your first real kiss. Let yourself float back into the past. Trace the events leading up to that kiss. Think about that person; about how you were feeling. About how it happened and how you felt while it was going on. Think about that person now. Wonder where they are and what they are doing. Smile.
5 – Listen to your favorite song from when you were in high school. Maybe there was a song that was playing during a school dance. A really good slow dance. Or maybe it was playing as you were driving somewhere with your friends. Or maybe it was playing over and over again as you made you way through your days, a companion of sorts, helping you through your adolescence. Listen to it now, and see if it doesn’t bring back a flood of good memories.
6 – Open an old scrap book of yours. Very few things evoke memories as strongly as a scrapbook chock full of pictures, objects, writings and who knows what else. Pull out yours from years ago. One that covers some good years, that will remind you of some of the best times of you life. Pull it out and let the memories overtake you. It’ll keep you floating for days.
7 – Help someone else. Sometimes rather than looking inwards, it’s better to focus out. Look around you, there is probably someone, or maybe even many people who you could do something for that would make their day better. Whether it’s volunteering, donating objects or your time or helping someone across the street. Helping someone that needs help can make you feel like a good person, one who is kind and generous. Helping others takes you away from your troubles or problems and brings you a sense of good will. Give it a whirl and you might just find your own problems or challenges aren’t so bad in comparison.
8 – Call or write to an old friend. Almost everyone has a friend they haven’t seen or heard from in a long time. Why not sit down this very minute and start writing. Even if you don’t’ have their address, just writing a letter to them will make you feel good.
9 – Accomplish a goal. One of the things about people is, they feel good when they accomplish something. And it doesn’t even have to be anything huge. Maybe it’s just mowing the lawn and making it look really nice. Or maybe, it’s talking to your boss about a raise, whether it pans out or not. Just setting a goal, doing what needs doing to get it done, and then standing back and admiring your work will make you feel good, strong and happy.
10 – Write a love letter to someone. There’s just something about writing a love letter that makes people happy. It may be you don’ have some special person in your life right now, so what; go ahead and write that letter anyway. You could write to a past lover, or one you hope to land some day. Or, if it makes you happy, write to a celebrity you admire or someone you’ve been crushing on for years. You don’t have to mail the letter, or send it via e-mail. Just writing it will make you smile as you pour out your feelings. And if it is for someone you can send it to, even better.
