Why anyone would attempt to make fitness goals around the holiday season I have no idea. That has to be the worst time ever to start a fitness routine. We are all so busy shopping, baking, wrapping, traveling and so on that it is hard to stick to the ones you had to begin with. So my first suggestion is to not make any new fitness goals during the holiday season. Once the first of the year comes around and you are not constantly rushing then you can start to think about it.
Keeping fitness goals during holiday seasons aren’t easy either. With all we have going on that often gets pushed aside. I know we are constantly rushing during the holiday season. With a four and a five year old and all the decorating, parades, shopping, wrapping, making candy and cookies, etc there just isn’t much time. My first suggestion would be to get up and get moving bright and early. I know none of us really want to crawl out of bed at 5 am on a dark, cold morning to head to the gym, but it’s your best bet. You’ll get it out of the way and you’ll feel great starting your day. That way once you pick the kids up from school or get off work you won’t feel rushed to fit everything in at night.
Another thing that might work for some people is to walk a little extra while out shopping. If you are out shopping and aren’t able to fit a gym trip in that night then take a few extra laps around the mall. It isn’t much, but it is a lot better then not doing anything at all. Also, it isn’t a bad idea to buy a small weight set to keep at home. I know there are days when I just don’t have time to make it to the gym but I need to do something. I’ll pull out my weights and just do a few sets of something here at home. I always feel much better afterwards, even if it was very limited.
Of course we all eat a lot more around the holidays. Often times co-workers are bringing in goodies, people in our houses are baking, we get gifts that consist of yummy food and of course those wonderful holiday parties! It is really hard to not eat a lot of junk during this time. I know I eat a bit more junk then I should during this time and I really don’t worry about it too much. I know that once the holidays are over I’ll get right back on track. So far I’ve been really good at doing that. If you are going to a party and you know there are going to be a lot of snacks I suggest eating before you go. If you are full and not starving you’ll be a lot less likely to snack while you are there.
The holidays are chaotic and just plain crazy. It really is hard to maintain our goals and it’s really difficult to just begin them. I think the most important thing is just to pick up where you left off as soon as they are over if you aren’t able to stick with them during the holidays. I mean who really wants to give up all the goodies that come with the holiday season!
