When the economy is bad like it has been for the past few years now people often wonder how they can stay healthy. One simple way is to make sure that you are exercising. That is just as important as eating right. I know that some people who have had a gym membership in the past might feel as if they can’t afford to renew now. Well, one suggestion I have is to get out and walk. It costs nothing to walk and we’ve found that it makes for a nice family event after dinner. Of course it’s now October and it’s starting to get chilly out, but bundle up. With a nice warm coat, a hat and gloves you should be okay to walk for a little while anyway.
I know that many concerns people have now is how do we afford to eat the way we always have. Maybe you were a family who purchased all organic food items and you can no longer afford to do that or maybe you aren’t able to buy all the things you bought before. There are ways around that as well. If you didn’t clip coupons before, start now! You can save so much money by doing this. If you have stores around that do double coupons and you watch for items to go on sale you have the potential to save large amounts of money. Maybe you can save on some things that you normally buy that will allow you to continue purchasing some of the organic items you are used to buying.
One of the things we have done is become a primarily vegetarian family. I was the first one to do it because of personal reasons, but my husband has followed. This is mainly due to the fact that I don’t purchase or cook meat. If we are having guests over I will, but almost any other time you won’t find it at our house. Not buying large amounts of meat can save you a lot of money and there are still plenty of ways to get the protein, etc. that is needed in your everyday diet.
This was the first year we’ve ever planted a garden and that was really nice. We could go out on almost any given day and pick cucumber after cucumber. We had tomatoes, lettuce, zucchini and other healthy items in our garden and besides the seeds and water it basically cost us nothing. That was how we got through the summer without buying fresh veggies from the grocery store. If you are someone that cans then making salsa and pickles and putting them back is another great idea. I know I chopped up several zucchinis and have it frozen into individual bags in the amount I’ll need to make bread. I’ll be able to make bread all winter long and it again isn’t going to cost much. Along with that it’s very easy to make your own bread with or without a bread maker.
There are many places online that can help you come up with easy, healthy recipes. Even though people are struggling financially there isn’t any reason why we can’t still remain healthy!
