Top 10 Upcoming Movies of December 2009

by sawpan

December 2009 will be a big month for upcoming movies, as everyone tries to escape the post-Black Friday chaos and Christmas blues by going to the cinema. There are quite a few great upcoming movies of December 2009 to choose from, too, including a few Oscar contenders, a movie starring Disney’s first black princess, and Heath Ledger’s final film. So whether you want to see some Oscar-worthy movies or just want to escape to the magical land of your choice, enjoy these upcoming movies of December 2009 to relax and let that Christmas stress melt away:

Brothers – I expect that this will be one of the upcoming movies of December 2009 with lots of Oscar buzz. It’s about a man returning home after being held as a POW in Afghanistan only to find that his brother has moved in and become the man of the house (his wife had assumed that she was a widow). Expect a lot of drama in one of the upcoming movies of December 2009 that could be packed with great performances from the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman, and Tobey Maguire. ‘Brothers’ hits theaters on December 4, 2009.

Up in the Air – This is one of the upcoming movies of December 2009 that sounds like it could be hit or miss, but I’ll give it a shot. Hopefully this George Clooney movie will be a bit better than ‘The Men Who Stare at Goats’, which was mildly intriguing but just didn’t really go anywhere. This movie, on the other hand, is about a man who goes everywhere and racks up an unbelievable amount of frequent flyer miles. His life of freedom and flight is threatened, but he meets the girl of his dreams that shares his passion for life in the sky. It’s directed by Jason Reitman, most well-known for a little flick called ‘Juno’, and it also stars a ‘Twilight’ alum in Anna Kendrick. Hopefully this is one of the upcoming movies of December 2009 that brings the funny (and maybe a few witty catchphrases) when it hits theaters in wide release on December 25, 2009.

The Princess and the Frog – This is one of the best upcoming movies of 2009 for kids (especially girls). It’s been awhile since a new Disney princess has been introduced, and this movie marks a Disney milestone by featuring the first black Disney princess. It’s also a return to traditional animation and is set in New Orleans during the jazz age, so expect it to be a colorful, musical, masterpiece. See this cool new twist on a classic fairytale in theaters on December 11, 2009.

Invictus – This is one of the upcoming movies of December 2009 that definitely has one of the best shots at some form of Oscar gold, since it’s directed by Clint Eastwood. Add the fact that it’s about Nelson Mandela and stars Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon, and this movie could pull a pretty big Oscar sweep. It’s one of the upcoming movies of December 2009 that could be extremely good; I just hope it’s interesting and at least somewhat historically accurate. Check it out on December 11, 2009.

The Lovely Bones – This is one of the upcoming movies of December 2009 that I will be interested to see, as LOTR director Peter Jackson steps away from the CGI. There’s already been a lot of buzz surrounding this movie based on the very popular book about a girl watching over her family from the afterlife after her brutal rape and murder. Of course what might be most intriguing is the look and feel of the afterlife, and this movie could be a big hit or a big bomb, depending on how the delicate subject matter is dealt with. Get ready to be opinionated when what could be one of the more controversial upcoming movies of December 2009 hits theaters on December 11, 2009.

A Single Man – This is one of the upcoming movies of 2009 that just might become an instant classic, as it appears to be a decent mainstream gay movie (it is based on one of the best novels of the modern gay liberation movement, after all). Colin Firth already has major Oscar buzz for his role as an English professor trying to cope with the death of his partner, and Julianne Moore might also pull of a nomination. The storyline may sound simplistic, but this could be one of the upcoming movies of December 2009 to become a runaway hit and run away with multiple Oscar wins. Check it out on December 25, 2009 in wide release.

Avatar – This is definitely one of the most talked about upcoming movies of December 2009. Does it look too much like ‘Delgo’ (and multiple other movies)? Does the elfin appearance of the giant blue aliens make this movie a sure miss with sci-fi fans as it seems like it tries too hard to blend the fantasy LOTR CGI style with modern technology? Perhaps, but James Cameron’s new 3D movie about earthlings invading an alien world is probably going to rake in the bucks no matter what, and, who knows? It could end up being just as big as ‘Star Wars’ (but hopefully without the George Lucas aftermath). Be prepared to hear a lot of opinionated geeks when this movie hits theaters on December 18, 2009.

Nine – Well, this is one of the upcoming movies of December 2009 that I’m now a little iffy about, as it was once on my list of the best upcoming movies of November 2009 (the release date got pushed back). Still, with a script based on Fellini’s ‘8 1/2’ and the star power in this film, it seems like it will at least be loads of fun to watch. After all, it is directed by Rob Marshall, who made ‘Chicago’ a modern musical masterpiece, and it has eye candy aplenty in Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, and Sophia Loren. It may not be one of the best upcoming movies of December 2009, but it could still waltz away with a few Oscar wins. It hits theaters in wide release on December 25, 2009.

The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus – When it comes to the upcoming movies of December 2009, this is probably the one I’m most looking forward to. I don’t know how well the story will go, but the visuals in the trailer are absolutely breathtaking. Of course this one will draw crowds because it’s Heath Ledger’s last film, but I’m also looking forward to the performances of the actors that filled in the rest of his role, which include Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law. Of course I love the fact that Terry Gilliam is directing, and I just can’t help but be drawn in by the whimsical feel of this film about Dr. Parnassuss, the owner of the mystical “Imaginarium” that made a deal with the devil, and his attempts at saving his young daughter whose life is in danger because of his selfish error. There have been many negative comments about this movie on IMDB, but I just can’t help but want to see it. You, too, might want to give it a chance on December 25, 2009.

Sherlock Holmes – As an avid Sherlock Holmes fan, I must say that this movie looks nothing like what I’ve imagined from reading the books. I don’t know if this is one of the upcoming movies of 2009 that could be Oscar worthy, but it is generating a lot of buzz due to the possibility that Holmes’ and Watsons’ relationship might be explored (or at least poked fun at). It looks like an action-packed bromance, and I’m sure the ladies won’t mind the Jude Law/Robert Downey Jr. coupling. A fedora has never looked as badass as Holmes’ iconic topper will on December 25, 2009.

So from plenty of upcoming movies based on beloved books to movies that explore imaginative new worlds, there’s sure to be plenty of upcoming movies of 2009 to help you unwind after a stressful day of Christmas shopping and wrapping presents.
