There is something special about a movie that can scare the pants off you each and every time you watch it. We all have our own list of what movie scares us the most and why . I chose the top ten movies that have scared me the most as a child as an adult and continue to do so even now after having watched them so many times they still manage to frighten me.
Released in 1990 this is a movie about seven kids who are trying to kill a demonic creature who is dressed as a clown. As the children grow up they hear the clown is killing again and they set out to destroy IT once and for all. What can be scarier than an already demonic creature who dresses as a clown? If you are not afraid of clowns, then you have not seen IT yet.
9. Thirty Days Of Night
When this came out in 2007 I thought did we finally get a vampire movie that has nothing to do with romance. Set in the town of Barrow Alaska right at the time the sun goes down, once down it will not be seen again for thirty days. A nice town for the bloodthirsty vampires to wreak havoc on. I was pleasantly surprised at how gory this film is and how monstrous these vampires really are. This is what a vampire movie should be. They stalk you, taunt you then kill you and offer you no mercy, great film.
One this movie hit theaters in 1975 the water never looked the same again. A huge great white shark that kills all in it’s path, what a wonderful killing machine it was. Not as gruesome as some of the films nowadays but never the less if you decide to swim in the ocean and you feel that little tug on your foot say your prayers.
7. Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me
Released in 1992 as the prequel to the series Twin Peaks. It takes place the last few days of Laura Palmer’s life right before she was murdered. This movie is such a psychological mind warp that leaves you with such a sick sad scared feeling inside. Who killed her, you know but you never really know. There is such evil in BOB yet BOB really does not exist outside he is the evil inside everyone, or his he? I don’t know but it’s great anyways.
Not many people remember this movie it was released back in 1979. A small town with unexplained deaths happening to it’s residents. A boy his older brother and another man realize that the local mortician “tall man” is responsible and they set out to figure a way to destroy him and his minions. This is the movie that makes me scared to be any where near a mausoleum. The Tall Man is one of the scariest figures ever to be seen on the television, the little demons in hoods and the silver ball that can fly anywhere and kills easily are truly terrifying.
A true fan favorite and rightly so. Released in 1980 about a troubled writer who has just became the new caretaker of a hotel that always gets snowed in during the winter. The previous caretaker went crazy and killed his family which is why there was a job available for the writer to take. He brings his wife and creepy kid, drinks heavily and goes mad.
One of the best ever slasher flicks. Released in 1978 about a psychopath who escaped a mental institution on Halloween to go and terrorize his younger sister, and her teenage friends. He is an emotionless madman who never dies no matter how many bullets are put into him, very scary.
3. Nightmare On Elm Street
The first in the long line of seriously campy sequels is about a sadistic man who stalks the children of the lynch mob that killed him by torturing them to death in their own dreams . Released in 1984 the first one is truly nightmarish because of it’s mostly slow dreamlike direction throughout the film. The death scenes are gory for it’s time, it will make you think twice about taking a bath.
Based off of the book by George Orwell and actually released in 1984 is about a society where the law controls everything you do. You are watched by surveillance constantly, you can not read, not write, nor love, do not show pain, you are allowed no emotion. The law can change what you know at anytime and you must accept this as the truth. A man finds a diary and writes in it, something strictly forbidden then he finds love and that is his downfall. I chose this as number two on my list because the thought of not being able to have any emotion for others, not being allowed to fall in love or have a mothers love for my own children or happiness for time spent with friends as well as not being able to see the beauty in anything scares me. A controlled world such as this one seems to real of a future for us all and that is truly more frightening than any monster can ever be.
Released in 1982 about a family terrorized by the unruly spirits whose dead bodies lie underneath their home. OK, the reason this one is number one is simple this movie scared the crap out of me as a child and continues to do so today. It might be rated PG but it still haunts me. This seems all too real as if it could happen to any family anytime anywhere, since a lot of people do believe in spirits and poltergeists and that is why it scares me more than any other film because I am one that believes that as well. To be haunted in your own home for mistakes that were not your doing. The taking of your own child who is so close yet so far away. Every time I see this movie on the television I tell myself to just go past it but I can not I have to watch it every time I can scary or not it’s a great film.
There you have it, my top ten list for scariest films of all time.
