The California Kid Urijah Faber went into WEC 36 riding a 13-fight winning streak having defended his Featherweight Championship five times at this point. Things were going great for the West Coast fighter as he was tops in his weight class, making good money and held an impressive 21-1 record. Another veteran MMA fighter by the name of Mike Thomas Brown would change all that after a big right hand and a flurry of strikes on the ground. After a rematch and second loss to Mike Thomas Brown, the former WEC Featherweight Champion Urijah Faber is left to decide where he wants to go with his career.
I’m of the belief that unless the fights are extremely close or controversial then fighters going 0-2 against certain opponents shouldn’t get a rematch. In this case the California Kid Urijah Faber has a decision to make about his future. The good news is that the former WEC Featherweight Champion has plenty of options to consider and choose from in the process. He just needs to step back and consider all those options and then do what is best for his career from a rankings and financial standpoint.
So what are the options for the California Kid Urijah Faber? Well he could always just stay at the 145-pound weight class and hope for Mike Thomas Brown to lose to another fighter. This would give him another chance to get back his WEC Featherweight Championship down the road. The problem with this situation is that he would likely be knocking off potential challengers for Mike Thomas Brown at the same time. There also isn’t as much money as he was making with title fights in the main event this way. If the current WEC Featherweight Champion keeps on winning then Urijah Faber is pretty much fighting for nothing in terms of a title shot.
But there are other choices than can be made to bring about certain changes for the California Kid Urijah Faber. With his walking weight being around 155 pounds it’s possible that he could maybe cut down to the 135-pound division and challenge WEC Bantamweight Champion Miguel Torres. I’m sure plenty of people would love to see that matchup for obvious reasons. It would be a fight pitting perhaps the two most popular fighters in the organization. But the question is would that weight cut be too much for the natural Featherweight?
Then of course a move up to the lightweight division at 155 pounds is always a possibility given that he would have to bulk up for that move. You would imagine that Urijah Faber would instantly become the star fighter and challenge for the championship in the WEC lightweight division. Many people are talking about him moving to the UFC to fight at 155 and this would be a huge mistake in my opinion. His losses were against larger natural lightweight fighters (Mike Thomas Brown and Tyson Griffin) and he would struggle in the UFC where there are some huge guys at that weight like Sean Sherk and Gray Maynard.
In the end it’s gonna be his decision to make and there are a ton of factors involved in the situation. The California Kid Urijah Faber would likely make the most money in the UFC but would be almost guaranteed to lose some fights. If he stays in the WEC then the former Featherweight Champion will remain on of the biggest stars in the organization and will be given some high profile matchups to appease the fans. It’s gonna be interesting to see what happens with the California Kid Urijah Faber.
