No woman has complete control over whether or not she gets breast cancer, but there’s little doubt that lifestyle factors play some role. Not taking hormone replacement therapy, exercising, avoiding alcohol, and eating right can all lower breast cancer risk according to some studies. Eating a healthy diet is another strategy women can use to put the odds in their favor. Eating more fruits, vegetables, more whole grains, and fewer high carb, high fat processed foods are all healthy choices. Even the spices you use to season food can have an impact on your risk of breast cancer. A recent study shows that two common spices commonly found in the spice cabinet could play a special role in lowering breast cancer risk.
According to a study published in Breast Cancer Research and Treatment, the spices tumeric and piperine, found in black pepper, may help to lower the risk of breast cancer. Researchers from the University of Michigan found that the combination of the two spices altered the number of stem cells produced by the body that could potentially develop into a cancerous breast tumor. Stem cells are cells that have the capability of developing into a variety of different types of cells – including breast cancer cells. Researchers found that the combination of tumeric and piperine reduced the number of cancerous stem cells without affected healthy breast tissue.
The good news is that most women have both tumeric and black pepper in their spice cabinet. The bad news is that this study used doses of tumeric and black pepper that were twenty times higher than what would normally be consumed through diet. Researchers are hoping that using supplements containing higher concentrations of these two spices could lower breast cancer risk naturally. Right now, many health foods stores sell piperine and tumeric supplements, but it’s difficult to know the quality of what you’re getting. The active ingredient in tumeric is curcumin which is the component that lowers breast cancer risk according to this study.
It may be premature to take a tumeric or piperine as a supplement to lower breast cancer risk just yet; and these supplements shouldn’t be used by women who have breast cancer without medical supervision. This is because some studies show that tumeric can interfere with cancer chemotherapy. Until further information comes out, the best way to use these spices to reduce the risk of breast cancer is to add more to your diet. Tumeric is a spice commonly used in Indian cuisine and there are a variety of tasty recipes online that’ll allow you to enjoy its unique taste and keep your breasts healthy at the same time.
