Are you hungry for some good West Texas food? If so, try one of these two West Texas Favorite eating places in Abilene, Texas. Both restaurants serve up some unique West Texas food. You won’t leave hungry; that’s for sure. You can choose delicious deep-fried catfish, or you can choose some old-fashioned hamburgers and fries. Try both of these West Texas restaurants while you’re in Abilene:
If you want some good Cajun Catfish, then stop in at Catfish Corner, located at 780 South Treadaway in Abilene, Texas. You can get the best fried or blackened Catfish that you can get anywhere in the United States. Some travel magazines have featured this Catfish restaurant for its good food, and it remains on the must-visit list for many tourist companies. The service sometimes fails to be consistent, but the food remains the best it can be. Here is what you can expect when you visit Catfish Corner:
Good food. Yes, you can eat the most delicious fried Catfish here. (It’s not greasy, either, because this restaurant fries their fish in peanut oil.) You can get a Fried Catfish Plate with all the trimmings for just under $7, day or night. If you have a monster appetite, you can order an all-you-can-eat Catfish Plate for just under $10, no sharing, though. Even better, you can get the best Blackened Cat, and it is well seasoned and truly blackened. Don’t think it’s for dieters, though. Catfish Corner cooks the Blackened Cat in loads of butter to keep it from sticking to the grill. You can eat a big plate of their famous hand-breaded onion rings while you wait. A full order serves 8-10 people.
Friendly people. Catfish Corner is well known for their down-home service that matches their down-home cooking. You can eat in the main dining room or on their screened-in porch, take your pick. The owners often come out and visit with the customers and might even eat a meal with you. While this restaurant does not provide formal entertainment, watching the waiters and waitresses perform their service magic will serve up plenty of fun for you. If you visit Catfish Corner enough, the staff will learn your name (and much of your business). Don’t get too attached to one person, though. This restaurant has a high employee turn over.
Cleanliness. This restaurant is typically a clean restaurant, though it might not look like it during their all-you-can-eat nights because the servers have to run so fast to keep up with the monster Texas appetites. This means the servers have less time to keep things in their rightful place. They clean as fast as they serve, so you will see a constant cycle of cleaning and serving. This restaurant stays so packed on their all-you-can-eat specials that sometimes customers come in and try to help clean a table just so that they can eat quicker.
Nepotism. Unfortunately, every restaurant has its negative points, and Catfish Corner is no different. The worst thing you can find about Catfish Corner is that it suffers from a severe case of nepotism. This restaurant is owned by two men, and the mother of one of the owners is the manager. Much of the people in control are close to the family or related to the family in some way. This is evident if you visit this restaurant more than a time or two because sometimes the people in power make decisions based on who the situation involves, rather than based on the situation itself.
Are you craving a taste of nostalgia? Do you miss the good old days when you could drive up under an awning, order your food, and then eat it in your car? Well, you can still do this at Larry’s Better Burger, located at 1233 North Treadaway in Abilene, Texas. Even better the prices are right. The prices aren’t quite as cheap as the good old days, but they certainly fail to match the high prices of other burger places. Plus, you get twice the burger than you do at other places. Don’t cheat yourself out of this treat. Next time you’re in Abilene, eat at Larry’s. Here’s a preview of what you can get:
Good food with fair prices. Larry’s Better Burger is the burger master of Texas. They make sure that they toast their buns, season their meat, and load up your burgers with plenty of vegetables. One of Larry’s burgers is a balanced meal in itself; all you need is a drink to go with it. The drinks also taste like drinks from the good old days, too, because they use the extra soft, small ice pellets that you used to get long ago. You can get a thick, juicy burger for just a small amount over $2, and you can get a drink for a bit over a $1. Just tell them how you like your burger, and they will make sure you get it that way.
They also sell Chicken Strip Baskets and Steak Finger Baskets, and you can order up a side of fried okra (around $1) to go along with your burger. Dessert anyone? Try their homemade Banana Nut shakes. You will swear that you are back in the 60s. Better call ahead, though. This place stays packed during meal times. (325) 677-6801. This restaurant is generally open from 11 am – 8 pm. You can eat under their drive-up canopy, or you can take your food with you.
Consistent service. No matter what you order or how much you order, the owner/operators will always greet you with a smile and work as fast as possible to turn out your order. You might have to wait a minute or two to get your order, but you will never see anyone just standing around in this drive-up restaurant because they’ve always got customers waiting, as well as customers coming to pick up orders. Too, the window attendant most always reads your order back to you, along with your name before handing you the order. This way, if they grabbed the wrong order, you’d know it immediately. Larry’s most often catches any mistakes before they go out the window.
Personal Attention. Larry makes it his business to get to know his regular customers. In fact, he gets to know his regular customers so well that he knows what you usually order. If you become a regular customer, Larry might greet you by calling out your order for verification, rather than waiting on you to order. He’s kind and talkative, but he never holds up the line by gossiping or shooting the bull with his customers. He’s friendly and efficient, and your food is always delicious.
