Unique Christmas Themes: Lego Christmas

by sawpan

My mom came up with the idea for a Lego Christmas because she found some individually wrapped Lego Christmas Tree ornaments for sale. Having recently gone through a divorce, she didn’t have all the Christmas stuff organized and reachable so she was on the look out for decorations to make a great Christmas for my sister and I. My whole family were Lego Maniacs so she bought the sets for the ornaments and we made our own.

With any themed Christmas you want to have ideas to make a good party. The Christmas Lego Party largely consisted of getting adults to play with Legos. We pulled out all the bins of legos that we had and made our own Christmas ornaments. Everyone had to make one. We encouraged all the guests to use their creativity to create their own ornaments. Some guests were no fun at all, so we eventually let them off the hook and gave them a pattern for making a candy cane using red and white blocks.

Handmade invitations to themed parties often come out better than buying them. For a Lego theme you can easily create a template to make cards that look like Lego pieces. Simply draw rectangles and squares with the evenly spaced bumps n them. Create a surplus of them and they can also be used for your Christmas cards. Wrapping paper can also be made by with this approach. Simply take butcher paper, or if you have them paper grocery bags, turn them inside out and draw legos on the outside.

If possible coordinate party food with the theme. For the Lego theme a cake is an easy option. Betty Crocker has a recipe and instructional video to help you. You can also make sugar cookies in the shape of rectangles and then attach small sugar cookie circles to the top.

For the kids a Lego Christmas Advent Calendar might be a good way to spend family time focused on the Lego theme. Kids will get to open and make a new Lego product every day until Christmas. There is also a Pirate Lego Christmas Advent Calendar.

Often for themed Christmases we would make our Christmas gifts relate to the theme. Legos can be pretty pricey so it may not be feasible with this theme. This is one year that we did not give out gifts relating to the theme. If you can stick with the theme though, it does make for a more magical Christmas. You may consider looking through second hand stores and garage sales, and scouring ebay and craigslist throughout the year to stockpile Legos. A family gift party can then be held where each family member makes gifts for their friends. You can even superglue them together if you want them to last.

If you are religious you will want to incorporate the reason for the season into every themed Christmas you hold. Legos, being building materials, can be used to make a Nativity scene. You can even use The Brick Testament Bible to read about Jesus’ birth as a family. The Brick Testament is a line-by-line rendition of the Bible using lego pieces. Reverend Brenden Powell Smith used only Lego brand pieces to create the scenes of over 400 Bible stories.

In recent years a lot of people have been doing Lego themed Christmas parties. You may be able to find used Lego Christmas items on ebay or craigslist or just surplus pieces to support your theme party. The decorations also double as an extra Christmas gift for the kids.
