The Victor Martinez trade is official. A Victor Martinez trade had been rumored for a while now, and the Cleveland Indians have finally done it. Victor Martinez was traded to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for three players on Friday afternoon. The move to trade Victor Martinez was seen coming after the Cleveland Indians traded Cliff Lee to the Philadelphia Phillies. It seems that the Indians are really in re-building mode now, and decided that they could trade Victor Martinez and still come out of it all right. The Victor Martinez trade could really help the Boston Red Sox, who now have another great hitter to add to their line-up.
In the Victor Martinez trade, the Boston Red Sox send three players back to the Cleveland Indians. The players that the Indians get are right hander Justin Masterson as well as minor league pitchers Nick Hagadone and Bryan Price. Masterson was the second-pick for the Boston Red Sox in 2006, and went 3-3 with a 4.50 ERA for the Red Sox in six starts. Nick Hagadone is a left handed pitcher that the Red Sox drafted in 2007, and who is currently pitching well in Class A right now. Bryan Price was just drafted last year, and has posted a 5-11 record with a 4.42 ERA in 31 games for the Boston minor league organizations.
The Victor Martinez trade seems to be an odd one from a financial stand-point for the Boston Red Sox, who already have highly paid Jason Varitek taking on the catching duties. With Victor Martinez now on the club, the have the choice to play either catcher at first base or in the designated hitter slot during games. Victor Martinez is a proven hitter, and that is what the Red Sox are hoping he can provide them in the stretch run of the 2009 season. Currently Victor Martinez is hitting .284 with 15 home runs and 67 RBI, and is easily capable of putting up 25 home runs, 110+ RBI and a .300+ batting average over a full season. He is a clutch player as well, that could be key in the playoffs.
In order to clear up a little room on the roster, the Boston Red Sox also traded Adam LaRoche to the Atlanta Braves for Casey Kotchman. Kotchman will serve as a pinch hitter off the bench, and LaRoche could start for the Atlanta Braves, who have been looking for offense lately. The move to trade for Victor Martinez definitely makes the Red Sox stronger, and gives them a great chance as the Red Sox and the Yankees battle for the divisional title. Nick Hagadone should also be good for the Indians.
