Setting down to pay the monthly bills for home maintenance, you automatically write out the checks or enter the information online for the electric bill, gas bill, water bill, landscape service, pool service and the painting contractor. Whoa! The landscape service, the pool service and the painting contractor? Are these home maintenance jobs that you can do yourself and save money?
When the economy was booming, hiring someone else to do home maintenance jobs around the house gave you more time to do the things you enjoyed. The economy has pretty much tanked and paying someone else to do your home maintenance is a luxury most can’t afford right now. The good news is that you can do your own home maintenance this summer and save money that would normally be paying someone else to do.
Think about what your landscape service does; mow, edge, weed-eat, fertilize, seed, plant, aerate, etc. You can learn to do that yourself and save money. Even if you just take over the mowing and weed-eating portion of your yard, you can cut down on the number of times the landscape service is needed and save at least half the money over the course of summer that you normally would have been spending for landscape services.
You can even tackle the bigger landscape maintenance jobs yourself by renting the equipment instead of purchasing it. Soil aerators, pressure washers, tillers, spray painting equipment and a variety of other equipment used for home maintenance can be rented. Find a neighbor or friend that needs the use of the same type of equipment as you do, rent the equipment together and split the costs to save money.
Pool water testing equipment can be purchased at your local pool supply store along with everything else you need to maintain your own pool. You can usually get great how-to tips and pool care information from the salesperson at the pool supply store too.
Did the painting contractor paint something that you could have painted yourself? A gallon of paint will cost you less than $30 (usually a lot less) so try your hand at painting. If you’ve never painted before, start with the least conspicuous spot, like the back of the house or interior wall of a closet until you get the feel for the paint roller and the right amount of paint.
Remember you’re not the only one who might be used to having a landscaping service take care of their lawn for them, or the pool service maintaining their pool or a painting contractor take care of house painting chores. Everyone is feeling the pinch of the economy and you can hire your services out, so you not only save money but you can make money as well by doing your own home maintenance.
