There are many contractors or remodeling companies that only specialize in carpentry. That may be all they were ever taught and they are comfortable just offering these services. Many do not know the concrete business and do not even think about learning this business. Every contractor should learn to operate a concrete business because it offers many benefits to your business.
Almost anything that is ever built has to have a concrete pad built under it whether it is a home, garage, home extension or porch cover. So when a homeowner needs a project completed the concrete contractor is the first person to know about it because that is who they normally call. Many concrete contractors only specialize in concrete work. So this forces the home owner to have to deal with two or more contractors for the same project. Most homeowners would prefer to just work with one contractor because it offers less people and less hassles. This is also a very good reason why the big contractors get all of the work versus the small companies because customers prefer to work with one company who does it all.
A carpenter contractor who also runs a concrete company can get to the homeowner before the project is begun and can obtain a concrete job and also a contract to install the wood structure. Any carpenter would prefer to start a job fresh to erase any doubts or questions about what the previous contractor has done. It isn’t hard to understand how this can increase your profits dramatically. It makes the project more enjoyable for you and the homeowner.
Many contractors have the habit of trying to belittle the previous contractor to make themselves look and feel superior. This isn’t a good habit to get into and it is a bad reflection on all contractors including themselves. Focus more on yourself and completing another excellent project to make the whole profession look good.
When a carpenter makes the foundation he can place his anchor bolts where he needs them to go versus having to cut off bolts that are in the wrong spot and having to drill new holes. Anchor bolts that are installed in wet concrete are far superior then any anchor bolt placed in a drilled hole. You can also ensure they are at the proper height and angle.
Concrete contractors do carpentery work on every job. Normally there is some digging and grass removal and you want to use cheap laborers versus skilled craftsmen. You lay a string line to install straight treated 2 x 4’s and use 2 x 2 wood stakes to hold them in place with #10 duplex nails. After you have completed your forms all you have to do is cut rebar and place it criss crossed within at the proper intervals normally every 18″ for flat work. ( driveway, sidewalks, patios) Use wire and a pig tail to tie the rebar together at every intersection. Use rocks to hold the rebar suspended in the air about 2″ at every other intersection so it will rest firmly in the middle of your concrete work. Then all you need is to hire a concrete finisher for every 9 yards of concrete that you pour and have laborers to deliver and push the concrete around where the concrete finisher needs it. One important thing to note is to never pour concrete when it looks like it will rain which could ruin your whole job.
The concrete business is a simple and fast business transaction that can offer a profit if you spend your money wisely. It can be labor intensive and you need to keep your labor costs down. Concrete company dispatchers and concrete finishers are a good source of information to help determine if this business is right for you. The profit potential of doing concrete work may be more satisfying then what you are normally accustomed to.
