There are so many products out there for new babies! Many of these things are just extras, though. What you really need for your baby are the bare necessities such as food, shelter, clothing, diapering, medicine, health insurance, place to sleep, safety for the car, and a place to get clean.
You can either breastfeed your baby or buy formula. Breastfeeding is much more affordable than formula, but not everyone can breastfeed. Make a choice that is right for you and your situation.
Make sure the baby has a home to come home to! It doesn’t have to be a mansion, but it does need to be a place that is safe and clean.
You will need to buy clothes for your new baby. Babies do not need a ton of cute outfits. The majority of the outfits that you put on your baby are going to end up getting dirty anyway. Opt for lots of onesies! Be sure that the clothes you buy are appropriate for the season. Buying used clothes is always a good option for new babies because they grow out of clothes so fast, it almost doesn’t make sense to buy their clothes brand new. Plus, the clothes that you get used are likely to be in fairly good condition, since babies do not wear the same clothes for more than a few months.
You need to buy diapers. You could choose to use disposable diapers (more expensive) or you could choose to cloth diaper your baby (way cheaper). Choose the option that best suits your situation, but always make sure there are fresh, clean diapers available for your baby. Make sure that you have extras for diapering such as wipes, diaper rash cream, baby powder, and baby lotion.
Your baby will need medicine! It is your job to make sure that the health of your baby is taken care of. Invest in a variety of medications that are acceptable for infants. Plan ahead so that you will always have suitable medicine on hand. You will also want to have a first aid kit handy in case of an emergency.
You will need some form of health insurance or public assistance. Make plans for health care before your baby arrives. It is very important that a baby gets medical care.
PLACE TO SLEEP
Your baby needs a safe, comfortable place to sleep. For the first few months your baby could sleep in a bassinet, or you could go straight to a crib. You could even co-sleep with your baby in your bed! If you choose to co-sleep, you will need to be sure that the baby will be safe in the bed, and will not roll or suffocate.
SAFETY FOR THE CAR
A car seat is a definite necessity. If you do not have a car, it is still wise to get a car seat. The hospital will not let you take your baby home unless you have one! Make sure that you buy a safe one that has not been recalled and has not been involved in any car accidents.
PLACE TO GET CLEAN
Your baby will need to be bathed. You can use a sink or buy a baby bathtub. You will also need washcloths, soap, and baby shampoo. Make sure you also have the necessary grooming tools for your baby such as fingernail clippers, brush, and a gum cleanser.
