If you’re interested in architecture and history, Rome is a great place to travel. Although it may seem like you have to be rich to have a good time there, you don’t. Rome was the last stop on my trip, and I was pretty much out of money. I spent two days there, and only spent about 100 Euros. If you can’t stand the idea of sleeping in a room full of people and walking everywhere, this isn’t for you. But if you want a great Roman experience for the cheapest price you can do, keep reading.
The best thing about Rome is that you can see so much for free. By simply walking down the streets, you can view a huge amount of ancient architecture. The first thing I would suggest is to get your hands on a good guidebook about Rome. This will be your tour guide instead of having to pay for someone to tell you everything. You’re guidebook will most likely have a map of the city, but you can also find a free tourist map just about anywhere you stay. Look through the guidebook and find what tourist attractions are free of charge. Those are the ones you want to keep your eye on. Get a pen and your map of the city, and mark all the places you want to see. Once you do this, you’ll have a good sense of where to start, and what routes to take to get places. If you’re traveling alone, I would suggest keeping the nice clothes and jewelry to a minimum. It’s probably also a good idea to carry a money holder under your clothes and keep all your important documents and money in that. That way, if your bag is stolen, you won’t be stranded.
the Colosseum is a must-see when you’re in Rome. It costs to go inside with a tour guide, but it’s just as amazing to stand on the outside and read you’re guide book about it. Watch out for the guys dressed in ancient Roman soldier uniforms. They’re trying to make money, so unless you want to pay 10 Euros for a picture with them on you’re own camera, I’d steer clear. Right next to the Colosseum are the Roman Forums. If you want to walk among these, you have to pay a fee, but there’s a way to see them without paying. When you walk down the Via Dei Fori Imperiali, you can look down all along the left side and see the forums. It’s a beautiful sight, and your guide book can tell you a lot about the ancient remains.
Another great site that’s free to visit is the Pantheon. You can enter the building, and remember to look up at the ceiling when you do. The Pantheon holds the tombs of Rafael and many Italian kings. Outside, is the Piazza Della Rotonda, a huge square filled with cafe’s and restaurants. There are always people wandering about and selling trinkets. It’s a great place to sit and people watch. This is also a good place to get a Gelato (Italian ice cream).
The Vatican is another must-see when it comes to Rome. The Church of St. Peter is huge, the outside surrounded by pillars. Every Sunday, the Pope holds mass there. Most of the museums in the Vatican cost money, but the architecture is beautiful.
Of course, no trip to Rome would be complete without a visit to the Trevi Fountain. This fountain was created by Nichola Salvi in the eighteenth century. There is a legend that says if you throw a coin into the fountain, you will return to Rome.
If you plan on staying in Rome more than just one day, you’ll be needing a place to sleep. There are a lot of hotels in the city that are pretty cheap, but if you’re going on a super low budget, I would recommend a hostel. These are usually about 25 Euros a night and most include a free breakfast. Some even include dinner. You will have to share a room with a lot of other people, but it’s not so bad for the price. Always be careful with your belongings in places like this. Most of the people there are just college students and seasoned travelers doing the same thing you are, but there’s still a chance of having something stolen. You can usually pay extra to have a locker for your belongings if it makes you feel safer.
When you’re on a budget, Rome can be a great place to visit. The history and architecture are on full display to anyone who simply walks down the street. Remember to have a great time!
