Mugs are heavy cups designed for casual dining. Mugs are different from coffee cups in that they have a sturdier handle, can hold larger quantities of hot liquids, and don’t require a saucer. The lack of a saucer makes a mug much more portable and allows your guests to move around from the dining room or kitchen, to the deck and outside.
A set of festive Holiday mugs is a nice, casual way of enjoying hot cocoa, tea, or coffee during the Holiday season.
Where to shop for the cheapest priced Holiday mugs
Shopping for Holiday themed mugs is quite easy in that all department stores (and even convenience stores) carry mugs in all different styles and Christmas motifs. The cheapest Holiday mugs can be found at the dollar store where they are priced for $1 each. These mugs tend to be of inferior quality however due to the lack of care in applying the self screened design. Mugs purchased from these stores tend to have bubbles and folds in the image, and lack the bold Holiday colors seen in the higher end products.
For myself, I shop for Holiday and Christmas mugs at the thrift stores. These mugs also tend to be priced for $1-$2 each, and a savvy shopper who knows her china can find Holiday pieces produced by Noritake, Sakura, Royal Doulton, Denby, Johnson Brothers, Pfaltzgraff, Metlox, and other well known china companies.
Where to find modestly priced Holiday mugs
Discount department stores, such as Kmart, Fred Meyer, Shopko, Walmart, Ross, Target, and Kohl’s tend to carry to low-to-mid pried range of holiday mugs. It is here where you can find Christmas mugs priced between $2-$6 each.
Target has perhaps the best selection of modestly priced Holiday themed mugs at the moment. Available patterns for 2009 include the colorful Tuscan priced at $34.99 for a set of 4 mugs; Sledding Snowman 4-pc mug set, also priced at $34.99; and the Holly Birds collection priced at $34.99 for the set of 4 mugs.
At Kohl’s, can be found the Oneida line of Holiday dinnerware including the cheery Snowmates mug sold individually for $4.49. Camp Jingles by Pfaltzgraff can also be found here with the cute reindeer mugs priced individually at $4.49. Other lines of Holiday and Christmas mugs include Reindeer games for $4.49 per mug and the Heartland dinner ware mug for $4.49.
Kmart carries a cute line of Holiday mugs for the inner Scottish in you. The Lodge Plaid is an on-line exclusive and is priced at $5.99 per mug.
High end Christmas and Holiday mugs
Macy’s carries the widest selection of seasonal Holiday dinnerware and mugs I’ve seen anywhere on the internet at sale prices that knock out the competition. A few high end lines of Holiday and Christmas mugs worth checking out include the wildly popular Spode Christmas Tree pattern with a 4-pc mug set sale priced at $84.00; Pfaltzgraff Winterberry” stemmed mug for $7.99 each; Waechtersbach iconic Christmas Tree Collection large size mug pried at $19.99 per individual cup; Oneida Snowman 4-pc mug set for $24.99; the very retro 222 Fifth Avenue, Paisley Ornament collection sold as a 4-pc latte set for $24.99; and 222 Fifth Avenue Christmas Play Collection 4-pc latte set also priced at $24.99.
Last but not least is the Amazon Marketplace which carries many of the Macy lines but also other lines of Holiday and Christmas mugs not seen elsewhere. This link will bring you to the first page of over 1.089 results for seasonal mugs. While many of these mugs are part of a dinner pattern, there is an incredible selection of mug sets that are fun to use just by themselves. Some of the Holiday mugs to look for include Tim Burton’s Nightmare before Christmas mug for $9.95; Lenox 12 Days of Christmas mug set for $99.95; Portmeiron A Christmas story 4-pc mug set for $19.99; and even a Cactus Print Christmas Cowboy boot mug for those urban cowboys, priced at a very affordable $3.57.
