Whistler is already getting a reputation from the 2010 Olympics as it was proudly chosen as a torch relay community, along with hosting a few of the events. But even with the lure of a world wide event, Whistler already is known as one of the best places to ski in North America.
Getting to Whistler is fairly easy through the Vancouver International Airport. Flights from any city to the airport are available and ground transportation to Whistler, for the two hour ride, is also easily available through bus services.
Hotel accommodations range from $200 a night and up. There are a host of amenities at the hotels such as business and fitness centers, swimming pools, saunas, on site restaurants and even your pets may be allowed. Although there are some chain hotels, many of them are local establishments. You can go to www.tripadvisor.com to view which hotels meet your needs.
Whistler itself offers a European charm of a small Alpine village. It is filled with quaint family owned shops, restaurants, spas and annual festivals. There are over 80 restaurants available, all with a range of prices and international tastes. If possible, try to book your reservations online. Many of the tourists return back each year, and can easily book up the favorites of the area for the time you may want. If you are looking to grab a quick bite or drink there are places sprinkled throughout the area.
There is also a great nightlife here, with street performers, shopping, theater and art galleries. The nighttime offers plenty of music, to fit all types and friendly bars with live bands. If you are looking for a place to go dancing then head to Tommy’s Africa, which has been open since 1988, or to Garfinkel’s, which boast bands and a DJ. If you just want great drinks and a light atmosphere, then head to the Champagne or Firerock Lounge.
If you are traveling with family, there is a fantastic kids program available. It is a camp for ages 3-12 and the children are divided based on age and ability. Certain parts of the program do offer lunch. It is highly recommended to book early to guarantee a spot and the children must have their own equipment. Whistler also offers a GPS tracking system that can be used for the skier, including kids. You can inquire about that once you reach your hotel.
The reputation of not only the great skiing available, but the hospitality, is what makes Whistler one of the best places to ski in Canada. Once you go, you will find yourself longing to return and quickly booking the next ski vacation.
